MSFC 3103.2 Approval required. Tents and membrane structures having an area in excess of 400 square feet (37 m2) shall not
be erected, operated or maintained for any purpose without first obtaining a permit and
approval from the fire code official.
Conditions of Tent Permit
1) Verification of fabric flame resistance shall be available to the Fire Inspector upon request.

2) No propane heaters allowed inside of tent while open to the public.
3) Weeds/vegetation shall be removed from around the structure to 10 feet.
4) The tent shall be erected a minimum of 20 feet from any permanent structure or property line.
5) Vehicles shall not be allowed to park closer than 20 feet to the tent.
6) “No Smoking” signs shall be posted out and inside structure. No open flame permitted in tent.
7) A portable fire extinguisher (2A 10 BC) shall be provided for a max travel distance of 50 ft.
8) An Electrical Permit shall be required if electricity is to be provided to the tent, and all electrical work
shall meet National Electrical Code (NEC) standards, including the temporary use of extension cords.

9) Hay/straw is prohibited in tent.
10) Flammable or combustible liquids are prohibited inside or near the tent/membrane.
11) Temporary tents, air-supported, air inflated or tensioned membrane structures shall not be erected for
a period of more than 180 days within a 12-month period on a single premise.
12) A detailed site and floor plan for tens or membrane structures with an occupant load of 50 or more
shall be provided with each application for approval. The tent or membrane structure floor plan shall
indicate details of means of egress facilities, seating capacity, arrangement of the seating and location
and type of heating and electrical equipment.
13) Exit signs shall be clearly marked, illuminated, and installed at exit doorways.
