Backyard Chicken Keeping Guide (See Veneta Land Development Ordinance 493, Section 5.30 for requirements)
The following information is written only as a guide; it is not intended nor shall it be considered a complete set of requirements. A
permit is required to keep chickens in the City of Veneta on lots less than one acre in size in the Single Family Residential, General
Residential, and Residential - Commercial Zoning Districts. The city recommends that an applicant review any applicable homeowners
association rules that may restrict chicken keeping prior to applying for a city permit.
Your permit application must include an application and site plan that includes the following:
Address: (Property Owner & Applicant)
Lot lines and dimensions
All existing structures
Location and dimensions of chicken coop and run
Location of any fencing
Coop and run distance to lot lines
Coop and run distance to dwelling on site and on adjacent property
Regulations The keeping of any chicken under a permit issued pursuant to Veneta Land Development Ordinance 493 shall be in
accordance with the following:
No more than one (1) chicken for each one thousand five hundred (1,500) square feet of lot area, up to a maximum of ten (10)
chickens in the Single Family Residential zone, General Family Residential zone and Residential Commercial zone.
No chickens are allowed on properties occupied by multi-family housing, including duplexes.
Roosters are prohibited.
Chickens shall be secure in a coop or chicken run or in a securely fenced backyard at all times including during non-daylight hours
and during daylight hours.
Building permit required for a chicken coop more than 200 square feet in size.
Protection of public health:
All feed must be stored in metal or other rodent proof receptacles.
Chicken manure must be collected, stored, composted and/ or removed from the property on a regular basis so as not to create a
public health hazard or nuisance. All manure not used for composting or fertilizing shall be removed.
Noise resulting from the keeping or maintaining of chickens must not exceed the limitation set forth in Veneta Municipal Code,
Chapter 9.20.
Specifications of chicken coop and run: A chicken coop and run are required. The construction and location of the chicken coop and run
shall be in compliance with the applicable building and zoning regulations of the city including:
Chicken coops and runs shall not be located in a required front yard.
Chicken coops and runs shall be set back at least 20 feet from dwellings on adjoining property and,
Chicken coops and runs shall be setback a minimum of 5-feet from abutting property.
Chicken coops and runs shall not exceed 8-feet in height.
The square footage of coops and runs together, shall not exceed one hundred (100) square feet in area, or ten (10) square feet per
animal, whichever is greater.
