ABOUT FYSI: The California Community College Chancellor’s Office (CCCCO) established the Foster Youth
Success Initiative (FYSI) to assist foster youth in accessing and successfully completing college. The purpose
of FYSI is to increase the number of California Community College students receiving degrees or vocational
certificates who are former foster youth. FYSI created partnerships to combine efforts to support students with
college and community resources.
Each college has the approval right to change the name of the program and Solano Community College has
adopted the name Guardian Scholars.
College-focused services include: Outreach, mentoring, academic counseling, assistance with
college admission and assistance with completing financial aid applications and forms.
Guardian Scholars’ goals are to improve: Access to college services and resources, completion of
attempted units, retention and completion of college degrees and certificates, and increase the number of
community college students transferring to a 4-year university.
