Network and Local File Storage Standards
FSUSD provides the network to support and enhance the important educational and business
processes of
the school district.
Please adhere to the following guidelines to allow ALL of our users to utilize the network disk space
to its
full potential and to enable us to efficiently protect important data:
Downloaded programs, zips, and compressed files are NOT to be stored on network drives. If you
have a need for
regular access to specific downloaded files, contact the IT Department and we may be able to arrange to have the files
stored in a central location. If you wish to keep the
compressed versions yourself, please keep them on your C: drive,
CDROM, or alternate storage
media.
Windows backup files, disk images, or entire copies of a hard drive are NOT to be kept on the
network.
Unzipped downloads are NOT be kept on the network. Install the authorized program and delete the install files as they
can be easily retrieved from the original source media.
Applications are NOT to be installed on your private H: drive or on the public S: drive. This type
of software belongs on
the C: drive. Only authorized departmental/campus applications are to be
run from the network. The IT Department will
install authorized departmental/campus
applications for your use.
Games, graphic images, personal photographs, music, videos, and movies are also inappropriate
for
network storage..
Temporary files and scratch databases should be located in your c:\temp directory. These files do
not ·require backup,
and generally will perform better if located on your C: drive.
The H: and S: drives are meant for storing and working on active documents, not archival storage.
These types of files
may include. Word, Excel, or PowerPoint documents, small Access databases,
text documents, small files which need to
be backed up, and files which are to be shared (between
users or between computers).
If you have never saved a file to the H: or S: drive, you may be under-utilizing network resources. If so,
you are missing out
on centralized storage, backup services, file sharing capabilities, and more.
For additional information on using network resources, please contact the Information Technology Help
Desk or your site
Technology Learning Coordinator.
By following these standards, we can maintain a reliable network infrastructure arid maximize the
public's technology
investment dollars.
Thank you.
