How to Rate a Taxi
Note – If there are any discrepancies between the instructions provided below and the Rules in the Public Section of
the manual, the Rules take precedence.
1. Rating Class 77 – Taxi – Rule 307:F Taxi
A copy of the registration and a completed Taxi questionnaire must be submitted with the application.
2. Determine driving record - Refer to Rule 309: Driving Record
This is based on the accident history of the vehicle (not the driver) and the number of years the insured has owned
the vehicle or one of a similar type. If the vehicle is newly acquired the driving record will be 0 unless it is replacing a
vehicle of similar type that the insured already owns.
3. Determine rate group – Refer to Rule 310: Rate Group
Use the private passenger rate group table to establish the rate group. If the vehicle cannot be found in the private
passenger rate group table determine the list price new and use Rating Group Table A to establish the rate group.
4. Determine the limits of liability required
There are separate premiums on the rate page for Road Hazard, Passenger Hazard Bodily Injury and Passenger
Hazard Property Damage.
Establish the limit of liability required for Road Hazard. This limit will appear on the dec. page and is the amount of
the coverage the insured will have for third party liability.
Establish the limit required for Passenger Hazard Bodily Injury and the limit for Passenger Hazard Property Damage.
These amounts will appear on the 6C endorsement that will be attached to the policy.
Ask your insured if they require a filing for the Taxi Commission. If a filing is required ensure the application is clearly
marked so your Servicing Carrier can issue the filing without delay.
Refer to Rule 324 (Proof of Insurance).
5. Determine the seating capacity – Refer to Rule 305:E
If the seating capacity of the vehicle excluding the driver exceeds 7, a per seat rate must be added to the taxi
premium. Contact your Servicing Carrier to obtain the per seat rate.
6. Physical Damage Coverage
Once the private passenger rate group has been established, determine whether minimum deductibles for Physical
Damage Coverage apply. The Minimum Deductible rule (101:C) in the Private Passenger Section, must be used for this
purpose. Establish the private passenger premium for each coverage and multiply by the percentage indicated for
each coverage on the taxi rate page.
7. Apply any accident or conviction surcharge – Refer to Rule 323: Accident and Conviction Surcharges
Accident and conviction surcharges are applied to the premiums calculated for Road Hazard, Passenger Hazard Bodily
Injury, Passenger Hazard Property Damage and Collision.
8. Apply Owner Operator Discount if applicable. – Refer to Rule 307:F
This discount applies when the taxi is driven solely by the applicant and spouse. This discount also applies when the
taxi is owned by multiple people but only driven by one specific owner. Family members may also drive the vehicle
solely for pleasure. A discount of 10% applies to all coverages.
