Guidelines for Writing the Abstract
Papers: The abstract is a brief summary of the contents of your project. Readers should be able to understand the essence of
your project just by reading the abstract. The easiest way to write the abstract is to work from an outline of the paper,
condensing headings and subheadings into understandable sentences. If you conducted research, state the problem in one or
two sentences. Describe your participants, methods, analysis, findings, and conclusion. If you wrote another type of paper
such as a review or analysis, describe your topic, purpose, scope, and conclusions.
Creative Works: Abstracts for fine art, music, theater, photography, or film productions should briefly describe the process of
development and production of the work(s). The abstract should briefly reflect on the challenges encounters, insights gained,
and skills learned or advanced in the course of the project. It should also note any documentation on file, such as CDs or
videos.
In all cases the abstract should be carefully reviewed and approved by your mentor.
