A Florida resident for tuition purposes is a person who has (or a dependent person whose parent or guardian has) established and maintained legal residence in Florida for
at least twelve months prior to the start of the academic term. Residency determination must be made before the end of the add/drop period of the term in which you seek
Florida Aid. Residence in Florida must be a bona fide domicile, other than for the purpose of maintaining a residence incidental to enrollment at an institution of higher education.
Other persons not meeting the twelve month legal residence requirement may be classified a Florida resident for tuition purposes only if they fall within one of the limited
special categories authorized by the Florida legislature and Board of Regents. All other persons are ineligible for classification as a Florida “resident for tuition purposes.”
Step1: I qualify as a RESIDENT for financial aid purposes as defined by Florida Statue. Check ONE category below under which you qualify.
I am an independent person and have maintained legal residence in Florida for at least 12 months. (Please refer to the backside of this form for independent student
eligibility.)
I am a dependent person and my parents or legal guardians have maintained residence in Florida for at least twelve months. (A parent or guardian must complete and
sign this form and provide copies of documents in Step 2.)
I meet residency requirements through a qualified exception- check appropriate box below
I am a dependent person who has resided for at least three years prior to initial enrollment with an adult other than my parents or legal guardian, and they
have maintained residence in Florida for the last twelve months. (Proof of dependency is required.)
I am married to a person who has maintained legal residence in Florida for at least 12 months. I have established legal residence and intend to make Florida
my permanent home. (Copy of Marriage Certificate required.)
I was previously enrolled in a Florida state institution and classified as a Florida resident for tuition purposes. I abandoned my domicile less than twelve
months ago, and am now re-establishing Florida legal residence.
According to the United States Bureau of Citizenship and Immigration Services, I am a permanent resident or other legal immigrant granted indefinite stay. I
have maintained domicile in Florida for at least twelve months. (BCIS documentation required.)
I am a member of the armed services of the United States and am stationed in Florida on active military duty pursuant to military orders, or whose home of
record is Florida or I am the member’s spouse or dependent child. (Copy of military orders or home of record required.)
I am full-time instructional or administrative employee employed by a Florida public school, community college or institution of higher education or I am the
employee’s spouse or dependent child. (Copy of employment verification required.)
I am part of the Latin American/Caribbean scholarship program. (Copy of scholarship papers required.)
Step 2: First term in which you are seeking Florida residency. Complete ONE of the following:

First time student to UT (i.e. the person claiming Florida residency) must submit copies of TWO documents dated
at least one year prior to the start of classes
for the
term in which Florida residency designation is sought. At least one document must come from the Tier One list; the second document may come from Tier One or Tier
Two.
Continuing students claiming residency for the first time must submit THREE documents, with at least one document from the Tier One list.

Dependency. Pursuant to federal regulations, for financial aid purposes, students are considered to be
dependent until the age of 24. For this reason, residency information must be that of the parent or legal
guardian.
A student is automatically determined to be an independent applicant for federal student aid if he/she meets any
one of the following criteria:
Born before January 1, 1998
Is married
Has children who receive more than half of their support from the student
Has dependents (other than children or a spouse) who receive more than half of their support from the
student
Both parents are deceased, or is/were a ward/dependent of the court
Is a veteran of the U.S. Armed Forces
Enrolled in a graduate or professional program (beyond a bachelor's degree)
Documentation. All supporting residency documents (2 are required with at least one from Tier One for
students new to UT; continuing students must provide 3 documents, with at least one from Tier One)
must be originally issued and dated more than one year before the start of classes, whether starting in the
fall or spring semester.
A Florida Residency Affidavit submitted without documentation will be returned.
Citizenship. To be considered a Florida resident for tuition purposes, the student must be a U.S. Citizen or eligible
noncitizen. Generally, you are an eligible noncitizen if you are one of the following:
U.S. permanent resident, with a Permanent Resident Card (formerly known as an Alien Registration
Receipt Card or "Green Card")
Conditional permanent resident (I-551C)
Other eligible noncitizen with an Arrival-Departure Record (I-94) from the Department of Homeland
Security showing any one of the following designations: "Refugee," "Asylum Granted," "Indefinite Parole,"
"Humanitarian Parole," or "Cuban-Haitian Entrant"
A citizen of the Republic of Palau (PW), the Republic of the Marshall Islands (MH), or the Federated States
of Micronesia (FM).
