Week 1: Closed Syllables
Read material and complete activities from the course, Schoolhouse Spelling: Third Grade.
Day 1 | Date:
Download the Schoolhouse Spelling Third Grade Teacher’s Guide/Lessons, the
Schoolhouse Spelling Third Grade Word List, and the Unit 1 Supplemental Worksheets
from the Lessons page. Print the worksheets as you decide to use them.
Parents should read the course Introduction in the Teacher’s Guide/Lessons to get an
overall picture of how to use this course and what to expect.
Parents should review the focus of Unit 1 and the Week 1 lesson in order to be able to
explain any unfamiliar concepts to the student.
Introduce the words and concept to be taught. Show the student the PowerPoint
presentation or video and discuss any new concepts. Help the student sound out each
word.
Have the student write or trace each word once.
Day 2 | Date:
Review the video or PowerPoint presentation.
Play a spelling game (from the Teacher’s Guide Introduction) or use one of the
resources or worksheets included with this curriculum.
Have the student write or trace each word at least once.
Day 3 | Date:
Review words and spelling rules.
Practice saying the word and spelling it with the student.
Have the student write or trace each word at least once.
Play a spelling game.
Day 4 | Date:
Review the words and play a spelling game.
Test if the student is ready. If not, have the student write the spelling words at least
once.
Day 5 | Date:
Test the student using one of the methods listed below under Ways to Test the
Student.
Have a celebration no matter what the child scores on the test. It’s important to
celebrate little victories and accomplishments.
