Steps:
1. Look at both factors.
2. Circle the greatest factor.
3. Illustrate using base ten blocks for
the greatest factor.
4. Write the factors for each base ten
block.
5. Rewrite using the distributive
property.
6. Solve.
Vocabulary Notes
Distributive Property: the product can be found
by decomposing (breaking down) one of the
factors into smaller numbers, multiplying the
two new number sentences, and then adding
the products
Example:
3 × 56
3 × (50 +6) = (3 × 50) + (3 × 6)
= 150 + 18
= 168
Decompose: break down a number into smaller
parts
274 = 100 + 100+ 50 + 20 + 4
or
200 + 70 + 4
Expanded form: a number decomposed into the
values of each digit
274 = 200 + 70 + 4
