Steps:
1. Circle the greater factor.
3 × 316
2. Rewrite the equation by decomposing
the
greater factor.
3 × (300 + 16)
or
3 × (100 + 100 + 100 + 10 + 6)
3. Distribute the lesser factor with the
decomposed factor.
(3 × 300) + (3 × 10) + (3 × 6)
4. Solve.
900 + 30 + 18 = 948


Distributive Property: the product can be found
by decomposing (breaking down) one of the
factors into smaller numbers, multiplying the
two new number sentences, and then adding
the products
Example:
3 × 56
3 × (50 +6) = (3 × 50) + (3 × 6)
= 150 + 18
= 168
Decompose: break down a number into smaller
parts
274 = 100 + 100+ 50 + 20 + 4
or
200 + 70 + 4
Expanded form:: a number decomposed into the
values of each digit
274 = 200 + 70 + 4
