Streambank and fish passage restoration
Horn Pond, Horn Pond Brook, Aberjona River
20 Academy Street, STE 306
The proposed project would undertake streambank and in-stream restoration to
reduce erosion, promote native and diverse habitat, ensure fish passage and
promote stewardship. This project would
a) Identify sites along these streams and tributaries that are impacted/impaired by
a lack of native vegetation and shade;
b) Identify sites along these streams and tributaries where banks are undercut or
susceptible to erosion;
c) Identify sites impacted by invasive species;
d) Identify sites at Horn Pond Brook that are disconnected during low flow
conditions;
d) Develop and implement low cost restoration plans for reducing erosion,
promoting connectivity, removing invasives, planting native species, promoting
stewardship.
The positive attributes of this project that link to the specifics of this NRD
opportunity include benefits to wetland restoration and pond restoration (reduce
stormwater runoff, water temperature). The benefits are located at the injured site.
The project is feasible, scaleable and have modest permit requirements. Costs are
commensurate with the scale. The work benefits multiple natural resources –
wetland, pond, upland, water quality, and river herring.
The need and value of this project includes significant engagement of community in
stewardship. There is currently not a significant community effort at riverine
stewardship in the community and this is an opportunity to catalyze participation.
