Mystic River Watershed Association
Herring Monitoring and Education
Horn Pond, and greater Winchester/Woburn
20 Academy Street, STE 306
The Mystic River Watershed Association is requesting a four year grant totaling
$200,000 for a education and citizen science effort designed to insure the
sustainability of anadromous fish restoration efforts in the watershed. The project
will have two aspects:
First we will deliver a river herring monitoring program at Horn Pond that will allow
resource managers to document and evaluate the success of fish passage
restoration.
The second component will be a robust education program with the goal of
cultivating support for restoration efforts. We will educate students and residents
about the importance of river herring; the importance of removing impediments to
fish passage; the role of wetlands; and the impact of human behavior on
connectivity, clean water, and habitat quality.
Deliverables will include:
- 5,000 community members engaged in community education (pop-ups,
stewardship events, tabling);
- 1,000 youth educated (inclusive of an in-classroom and field experience with
MyRWA's professional educator);
- Online counting platform developed and launched, with a total of 2,000 videos
counted by the end of the project;
- Materials developed for public education including press, social media, signage
etc; and,
- In-person counting program, that involves dozens of volunteers and provides
sufficient datasets for DMF.
