FOR THE CONTROL OF FOOTROT IN SHEEP
DIRECTIONS FOR USE
It is highly recommended that the user contact the relevant State Department of Agriculture (or equivalent) for details of treatment timing and strategy. Foot bathing should begin
as soon as there is a risk of spread. It should continue while spread is apparent. It can be terminated when grass hays off.
PREPARATION OF THE FOOTBATH
To prepare a footbath add 1 litre of Redox FORMALIN to 19 litres of water. A suitable quantity is needed to cover the feet (50mm deep) over the area of the bath. A small
quantity of straw may be added to reduce splashing, secure footing and to spread toes apart. The footbath should be renewed regularly. Avoid excessive concentration of the bath
as this can damage foot tissue. The footbath should be a minimum of 6 meters in length.
TREATMENT DURING SPREAD PERIOD
Start foot bathing as soon as there is a risk of spread. Initially all sheep should be bathed for 5-10 minutes to ensure that all 4 feet are submerged. Subsequent foot bathing should
continue every 5-7 days for 5-10 minutes or alternatively as a walk through bath. Walkthrough baths can be used in gateways to bath sheep into fresh paddocks or where portable
yards are used. Successful treatment depends on tact of the chemical with the skin between the claw and with the area of under-running, so that the organism (Dichelobacter
nodosus) is killed. Before entering the bath all sheep should have their feed carefully examined and pared if under-running is present. The amount of paring required is a
compromise between the need to remove disease horn and avoiding excessive trauma. The aim is to prevent transmission of footrot to clean sheep and otherwise slow down the
course of the disease.
Controlling the spread of footrot by bathing may take 2 months or longer. If segregation of clean and infected sheep is carried out before pastures dry off, clean sheep should be
put into paddocks which have not carried sheep for at least 7 days. Clean sheep should always be bathed first.
Infected sheep and clean sheep should be segregated when conditions dry off to allow a series of 2-3 inspections of all feet of all sheep to be carried out over the summer period
with advice from your veterinarian.
Triple or (preferably) pressure rinse into the medicated water. Do not dispose of undiluted chemicals on site. Break, crush or puncture and bury empty containers in a Local
Authority Landfill. If no landfill is available, bury the containers below 500 mm in a disposal pit specifically marked and set up for this purpose, clear of waterways, vegetation
and roots. Empty containers and product should not be burnt.
