In this lesson, you will explore websites to learn the location of your
state and community using absolute and relative location. You
will also check out information related to the climate of Georgia.
Instructions: Click the links below and use the information from the websites to
complete each item.
Click here http://georgia.hometownlocator.com/maps/. Use this link to find some
relative locations.
1. Use the map on this site to identify the states that border Georgia and list them
on the lines that follow. Use the + and - buttons to zoom in and out, as needed.

2. Write a sentence to explain the location of Georgia relative to one of its border
states. For example: Alabama is on the western border of Georgia.

3. Find your county on the map. Write a sentence that expresses its location
relative to another county. For example: Lee County is south of Sumter County.

4. List the Georgia counties or other states that border your county.

Now, let’s find some absolute locations. Click the Counties link in the top menu bar of
the website. Click the hyperlink for your county. Click the link for Schools of your
county. Click the name of your school (or a nearby school if yours is not listed). Take a
moment to examine the map. Use the buttons for “Satellite” and Terrain” and “Labels”
to see different views of the area around your school. Use “Zoom In” to see your school
building on the Satellite with Labels view.
Now click the link for BIG Map. Look for a popup box to show the absolute location of
your school (latitude and longitude).

Note: this website uses a decimal type latitude and longitude. Click
the GNIS FID link to find the coordinates in degrees, minutes, and
seconds, or DMS.
5. Record the latitude and longitude of your school and three other cultural
features in your community. You may need to click the Back button on your Web
browser four times to return to the Cultural Features list for your county.
