LARAMIE COUNTY COMMUNITY COLLEGE
DENTAL HYGIENE PROGRAM
August 15, 2019 DEADLINE
ADMISSION INFORMATION AND PROCESS
For classes beginning January 2020
The dental hygienist is a preventive oral care
professional licensed to provide educational,
clinical, and therapeutic dental hygiene services
to the public. Flexible scheduling is a distinctive
feature of this job. Full-time, part-time, evening, and
weekend work is widely available. Earnings vary by
geographic location, employment settings, and years
of experience.
Our unique, 16-month program combines academic
study with supervised clinical experience. Graduates
will receive an Associates of Applied Science degree
and be eligible to take the appropriate national,
regional, and/or state examinations. Applicants are
encouraged to contact the State Boards of Dentistry
in the states in which they wish to practice for
individual licensing requirements and circumstances
for licensure denial. The LCCC Dental Hygiene
Program is accredited by the Commission on Dental
Accreditation. The Commission is a specialized
accrediting body recognized by the United States
Department of Education. The Commission
on Dental Accreditation can be contacted at
312.440.4653 or at 211 East Chicago Avenue,
Chicago, IL 60611.
The Dental Hygiene Program is rigorous study of
advanced science classes offered in an accelerated
format.
General education and basic science courses
are essential to prepare the student to succeed.
Therefore, applicants are required to complete
predental hygiene course requirements. Each
prerequisite course must be completed with a “C
or higher. Completion of the prerequisite course
work does not guarantee admission into the Dental
Hygiene Program. Additionally, LCCC’s academic
skills assessment and placement policy apply.
APPLICATION TO THE DENTAL HYGIENE PROGRAM
Laramie County Community College (LCCC) is an open admissions institution
and provides programs beneficial to all students. College admission
requirements are found in the college catalog.
Because the Dental Hygiene Program receives more applications than available
positions, it is necessary to employ strict selection procedures so that those
applicants who are deemed best qualified to succeed may be selected. It is the
applicant’s responsibility to seek current information and to see that her/his
file is complete. The program will select 20. To apply to the program, students
must complete the following steps:
Step 1
Submit an LCCC Admission Application to the
Admissions Office. It is the student’s responsibility
to request official transcripts of high school and
college courses to be sent to the Student Records
Office. GED recipients must request an official score
report and have it sent to LCCC Student Records.
Application to LCCC must be completed with
successful admission by June 1.
NOTE: Unofficial college transcripts (student
copies, including LCCC) must be attached and
submitted with the Dental Hygiene Application.
Step 2
Prerequisites:
Completion of/or substantial progress in completing,
all required prerequisites as outlined in the program
application. All must be completed with a “C” or
higher by December 15, 2019:
The above credit hours use a 60-minute hour. One
credit of theory class = 15 clock hours; one credit
of lab = 30 clock hours and one credit of clinical =
45 clock hours.
^ (Students must complete one 8-credit sequence.
Taking one course from each sequence will NOT
fulfill this requirement)
1
COLS 1000 or another approved College Seminar
course must be taken by students entering the
program in January 2020. Laramie County
Community College has identified several exemptions
from this requirement:
a. A Student has completed a credit-bearing AA, AS,
AAS, Credit Certificate, Credit Diploma or higher
degree from a regionally accredited institution.
b. A Student has successfully completed a minimum
of 15 college-level credits, which must include
college-level English and college-level math, with
a GPA of 2.5 or higher at a regionally accredited
institution at the time of admission or readmission.
c. Student has successfully completed a minimum
of 24 college-level institutional credits with a GPA
of 2.5 or higher at the time the student submits
a formal change of program. (This criteria is
intended for LCCC students who complete one
or more of the tiered Credit Diplomas who then
decide to complete the AAS degree, or for those
who have been attending LCCC and decide to
change their program of study).
d. Student has transferred a minimum of 15 military
credits (Joint Services Transcript). Please see an
academic advisor to be sure that you meet one
of these exemptions and do not have to take
COLS 1000.
2
ANTH 1200 will be accepted although SOC 1000 is
strongly recommended.
3
CO/M 2010 Public Speaking or CO/M 1015
Foundations of Communications will be required.
CO/M 2010 is strongly recommended.
4
MICR 2240 Medical Microbiology may substitute
MICR 2210 General Microbiology if transferring in.
* Must be five years current. A minimum of three
Science courses must be completed by September 1.
+ POLS 1000 Optional prerequisite, required program
course. If any of these courses have been accepted
for transfer at LCCC from an out-of-state institution,
a one-credit hour course of Wyoming Constitution
(POLS 1100) is required. Refer to your degree
requirements in the college catalog for more
specific guidelines. Although POLS 1000 is an
optional prerequisite, if this is not completed prior to
starting the program, it will be an additional course
that is required during the program. It is highly
recommended that the student complete this course
prior to beginning the dental hygiene program.

student will need to have an Eye Examination
Report completed (form supplied after acceptance
to the program) by an optometrist or physician
who provides eye examinations.
Failure to have the outlined immunizations
may prevent a student from completing clinical
requirements of the Dental Hygiene Program and
affect the ability to graduate.
d. Information will be provided on how to purchase
Dental Hygiene text books and instrument kits in
the conditional acceptance letter.
e. A copy of both sides of a current American
Heart Association certification card in Cardio
Pulmonary Resuscitation for Health Care Providers.
(Note: Other organization’s certification is NOT
acceptable.) Students must maintain current
Health Care Provider CPR certification at all times
while in the Dental Hygiene Program.
f. A verification form related to personal health
insurance. All students admitted to the Dental
Hygiene Program are expected to be responsible
for personal health costs. Students are not covered
by worker’s compensation because they are not
employees of LCCC or any clinical sites. The
college does not offer health insurance.
g. Acceptable chemical impairment screening
and criminal background checks are required.
Chemical impairment may compromise both
the educational process and patient safety. Early
identification, evaluation and treatment are in
the best interest of our students and the patients
they serve. In addition, clinical sites may require
random drug testing and/or drug testing for
reasonable cause. Generally, the urine drug test
screens for alcoholic beverages, illegal drugs, or
drugs that impair judgment while in the clinical
site, classroom or participating in program
activities. Testing positive on the screening, or
evidence of tampering with a specimen, will
disqualify a student from participating in program
assignments.
Findings from the criminal background checks
or drug screening may result in revocation of
admission in the the Dental Hygiene Program.
Dental health professionals may be exposed to blood
borne pathogens/contagious diseases, therefore, strict
compliance with Centers of Disease Control (CDC) and
OSHA standards are maintained. Although diseases
may be encountered, research indicates that risks are
negligible when optimal infection control is practiced.
Policies on blood borne and infectious diseases are
available upon request from the Dental Hygiene
Program.
In addition to drug screening, for the safety of patients
and health care workers, child abuse clearance and
Step 3
Pre-admission observation: Complete an observation
of 2 dental hygienists, at two separate dental offices,
for a total of 8 hours. Applicants should contact
offices to make an appointment and to ask about
proper attire. Each dental hygienist who is shadowed
should fill out the attached sheet and put it in a sealed
envelope for the student to submit with the application
to the Dental Hygiene Program.
Observations may be waived for applicants with a
minimum of one year of dental experience. To waive
observations, a letter from the dental office doctor or
manager should be submitted with the Dental Hygiene
Application in a sealed envelope.
Step 4
Complete the Dental Hygiene Program’s Application
Form. LCCC Student ID number must be supplied at
the time of application as verification of acceptance
to the college. Applications to the program will be
accepted after July 15, 2019 and must be received on
or before August 15, 2019. Prerequisite courses must
be completed or in progress at the time of application.
Students enrolled in the Fall semester can only be
enrolled in a maximum of two prerequisite courses
and all other prerequisites must be complete prior to
admission into the Dental Hygiene Program.
All courses completed by the application deadline will
be awarded points according to the attached criteria.
For points to be awarded for completed summer
semester courses, students must submit a copy of
unofficial transcripts, grade reports or verification by
the course instructor to the dental hygiene program
on or before August 25. Official transcripts for
outstanding prerequisite courses must be submitted
to LCCC Student Records and the unoffical record
showing completion with a “C” or better should be
sent to the Dental Hygiene Program.
Step 5
If the applicant is accepted into the program, proof
of the following additional requirements must be
submitted to the dental hygiene program by the dates
stipulated in the conditional acceptance letter:
a. Completed acceptance form
b. Dental Hygiene Program fee deposit of $3,717.00
c. All of the following documentations will be
uploaded by the applicant to an online record
management system. Please follow the directions
provided in the conditional acceptance letter.
Verification of current vaccinations and titers
(Hepatitis B, Rubella, Rubeola, Diptheria, Tetanus,
MMR, Varicella). A current TB test (PPD) and
Influenza (flu) shot. Students must maintain
current TB testing and Influenza (flu) shot at all
times while in the Dental Hygiene Program. The
1. Each prerequisite course must be completed with
a grade of C or higher.
2. Science prerequisite GPA: A 2.5 GPA minimum
is required for all science course prerequisites
to obtain points. 0.75 points will be awarded for
every 0.05 points over the minimum 2.5 GPA
requirement. (22.5 points maximum)
3. General studies prerequisite GPA: A 2.5 GPA
minimum required for all general studies
prerequisites to obtain points. 0.5 points will be
awarded for every 0.05 points over the minimum
2.5 GPA requirement. (15 points maximum).
For students with all five general studies courses
completed by September 1, an additional one
point will be awarded.
4. For courses that have been retaken, the most
recent grade will be used.
5. One point will be awarded for each of the following
general studies prerequisite courses completed
with a grade of C or higher prior to the application:
English 1: Composition, College Algebra,
Sociological Principles, General Psychology, and
Public Speaking. (5 points maximum)
6. Two points will be awarded for each of the
following science prerequisite courses completed
with a grade of C or higher prior to the application:
Chemistry, Anatomy, Physiology, and Medical
Microbiology. A minimum of 3 science courses
must be completed prior to application deadline.
(8 points maximum). For students with all four
science courses completed by September 1, an
additional two points will be awarded.
7. An applicant is allowed a maximum of two
retakes for prerequisite courses before receiving
point deduction. This is not per course but for all
prerequisite courses. One point will be deducted
from the applicant’s overall points for each course
retake over the two maximum courses.
Example: A student retakes Chemistry, English,
and Sociology to improve their grades. Chemistry
and English would be considered two retakes.
Sociology would be the third retake and result in
a one point deduction for the applicant’s overall
score.
8. If two applicants are equally qualified, the overall
prerequisite GPA will be the determining factor in
the selection process. In the event that there is
still a tie, the science GPA will be the determining
factor. If there is still a tie, preference will be given
to the Wyoming resident, and finally, previous work
experience in the dental field.
ADMISSION TO THE DENTAL HYGIENE PROGRAM
To be considered for admission into the program, students must complete
Steps 1-5 which were previously outlined.
Admission is based on a point system of completed prerequisite coursework.
LCCC does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, national origin, sex,
age, or disability in admission or access to, or treatment or employment in,
its educational programs or activities.
criminal background checks are required prior to
a clinical assignment. Certain criminal activity as
evidenced by a criminal background check may also
disqualify a student from clinical participation.
Students are advised that the inability to gain clinical
education experiences can result in the inability to
meet program objectives and outcomes. These
circumstances may prevent final acceptance into and/
or progression through the program, and ultimately
result in dismissal from the program.
The complete Chemical Impairment and Background
Check Policy is outlined in the orientation letter and
will be reviewed on the first day of orientation with
the Clinic Manual. Every student admitted to the
program will be required to abide by the policy and
acknowledge agreement with the policy in order to be
accepted into the program.
NOTE: Applicants who have been convicted of a
felony, gross misdemeanor or misdemeanor (or plead
guilty or nolo contender has been entered) should
request a copy of a letter concerning his/her eligibility
status for licensure from the State Board of Dental
Examiners for the state in which the student intends
to practice. Eligibility for licensure varies by state so it
is important to check with the correct agency prior to
applying to the program.

LARAMIE COUNTY COMMUNITY COLLEGE
DENTAL HYGIENE BLOODBORNE PATHOGEN
STATEMENT AND POLICY
The LCCC dental hygiene clinic adheres to the
recommended guidelines set forth by the ADA
and the CDC. The dental hygiene clinic follows all
standard precautions such as HBV vaccination,
hand washing, protective barriers and the disposal
of needles and other sharp instruments in a
safe manner.
When precautions are followed, patients infected
with bloodborne pathogens can be treated safely in
the dental setting. According to the CDC, there is no
significant risk of contracting bloodborne diseases
through the provision of dental treatment. Standard
precautions is an effective means of reducing
bloodborne pathogen transmission.
Dental hygiene students are advised to be up to date
on all vaccines and receive the hepatitis B vaccination
series and titer verification, to protect themselves and
their patients from infectious organisms.
Patients seen in the dental hygiene clinic who may be
infected with a bloodborne pathogen are entitled to
dental hygiene treatment. A dental hygiene student
may not refuse to provide dental hygiene services
based upon a patient’s medical status.
Dental professionals are obligated to protect the
confidentiality of patient records and to maintain
those records. A patient’s bloodborne pathogen
status and medical condition may only be shared with
the patient’s other health care providers as allowed by
state and federal law.
All dental hygiene students have an ethical obligation
to immediately inform any patient they suspect may
have been exposed to blood or other infectious
material while seen in the dental hygiene clinic. As
required by law, infected dental health care workers
must practice in compliance with CDC.
Current evidence indicates that there is no significant
risk of contracting bloodborne diseases through
dental hygiene treatment when standard precautions
are routinely followed. All dental hygiene students
are strongly urged to undergo a medical physical to
determine their bloodborne pathogen status. Those
students who believe they are at risk for bloodborne
pathogen infection should regularly monitor their
status. All health care workers testing positive for
a bloodborne pathogens must practice only in
strict compliance with the current infection-control
recommendations of the CDC for infected providers
as required by law.
If an exposure in the dental hygiene clinic were to
occur, the student would be sent for a post exposure
evaluation and the patient would be referred to
a qualified medical practitioner to provide post
exposure services.

The Dental Hygiene Program will provide some of the
instruments, dosimeter service, SADHA membership,
and limited course supplies such as some materials
needed for table clinics, community health projects,
and class presentations. Instruments and supplies
that are provided by the program are the property of
the Dental Hygiene Program and must be returned
at the end of Term 4. You will be charged for any
instruments or supplies not returned.
The Dental Hygiene Program Fee covers all four
terms. A 25% deposit will be required at the time
of acceptance into the program and will be applied
toward the Principles of Dental Hygiene course fee.
If the applicant notifies the program in writing that
she/he no longer wants to be considered as an
accepted member of the class of 2021, the deposit
will be returned in full through October 31, 2019.
Beginning November 1, 2019, the entire amount will
be forfeited to the program. The remaining program
fee will be evenly distributed through the remainder of
the curriculum. Students are encouraged to visit with

STUDENT COMMITMENT
Due to the demands of the full-time, accelerated
LCCC Dental Hygiene Program, student employment
is not encouraged. This personal decision should be
based on individual performance in the classroom,
clinical sites and personal health. It is the desire of
the dental hygiene faculty that students be successful
in the program and that essential learning is not
compromised. Students will not be excused from
class or clinical assignments for personal work
schedules. An alternative may be found by contacting
the LCCC Financial Aid Office.
Clinical, lab and program activities in the LCCC
Clinic and other external sites may be scheduled
as early as 7 a.m. or as late as 10 p.m. and may be
on any day of the week. The student is required to
participate in these activities as scheduled. Child care
arrangements, work schedules and transportation are
the responsibility of the student.
Classroom, lab and service learning attendance
is expected and accountability for knowledge and
assignments are the student’s responsibility. Failure to
comply with attendance or assignments may interfere
with progression in the program and could result in
dismissal from the program.
