Your contract for employment as a Resident Director calls for a commitment of approximately 20 hours per week to the job. University
policy limits on-campus employment to 20 hours per week. Please be aware by accepting a position as a Resident Director, you will be
required to limit your other employment opportunities both on and off campus. Please answer all the questions listed below and e-mail

In order to be considered in the RD selection process, you must submit an application by the deadline of 5:00 p.m.
on Friday, January 25, 2019. Please answer the following questions, each in 250 words or less:

As a Resident Director, you will be expected to take on many roles. Please answer the following
questions explaining how you will fill these roles.

Leader: What kind of a residence hall do you want to work in? Why? What are the biggest
challenges to creating this type of residence hall experience at MSU-Northern?
How would you
rate your supervision and leadership qualities? Why have people rated these qualities this
high / lower?
4. Policy Enforcer: You must encourage residents and other students to be accountable for
their actions. As a Resident Director, you will address policy violations directly and
promote individual responsibility among the community. How are you able to be an
authority figure for your peers? What is your philosophy of discipline? What are your
procedures for implementation?
5. Role Model: As a Resident Director, you must lead by example. This means you must
always support campus policies and abide by them. In your own words, how would you
describe this role of a Resident Director to your future staff?

6. Community Builder: As a Resident Director, you are responsible for developing a team of
Resident Assistants who will bring people together based on their interests and needs.
You must also create a positive environment in your building where residents can feel
comfortable. What is your philosophy of community development? How would you
implement your philosophy into a residence hall setting?
7. Student: In Residence Life, we seek to support the academic mission of Montana State University
Northern.
A Resident Director is primarily a student; the Resident Director position is
your second priority after you academics. This means that any sports or extracurricular
activities commitment always come after your commitment as a Resident Director. Please
describe how you would go about supporting the classroom experience in the residence halls.
