Orkney Islands Council
Key Worker Self-Nomination
As you may be aware, Scottish Government has advised us that all local authority
schools and early learning and childcare settings should close to children and young
people with effect from 17:00 on Friday 20 March 2020.
We have also been advised that the Council should continue to provide access to
appropriate learning and childcare (via a learning hub) that allows parents/carers
who are designated as key workers to participate in the national response to
COVID-19.
A key worker is someone employed in a post that ensures that essential services
can be delivered and/or covers tasks within the community which support the
vulnerable and aid community resilience. As a broad guide, the definition will include:
• Category 1: Health and Care workers directly supporting COVID response,
and associated staff; Health and Care workers supporting life-threatening
emergency work, as well as critical primary and community care provision;
Energy suppliers; staff providing childcare/learning for other category 1
parents/carers.
• Category 2: All other Health and Care workers, and wider public sector
workers providing emergency/critical welfare services, as well as those
supporting our Critical National Infrastructure.
• Category 3: All workers without whom there could be a significant impact on
Scotland (but where the response to COVID-19, or the ability to perform
essential tasks to keep the country running would not be severely
compromised).
Parents/Carers who believe that they may be regarded as key workers should
complete and e-mail the form below to education.leisure@orkney.gov.uk
