Lost or Found a Pet
LOST PETS:
If your pet comes into one of the MCACC shelters with a
Maricopa County dog license, an ID tag, or a microchip, we can
contact you immediately.
Look around your neighborhood carefully. Many animals will
hide not far from home. Look under bushes, especially for cats.
Please visit our lost and found web site partners to report a
missing or found animal—see side bar
Personally visit and walk through both of our East and West
Valley Animal Care Centers every two days to look for your pet.
Animals are held for 72 hours unless they have a current dog
license, then they are held for 5 days. After the holding period,
animals are evaluated, then put up for adoption.
Post flyers (see sample below) in the neighborhood where your pet
was lost or found, with a description and picture.
Talk to local businesses, your mail carrier, paper delivery person,
garbage hauler, local veterinary clinics, pet stores, and neighbors.
Ask elementary schools in your area to post a flyer. Kids are
every-where and may see your pet.
Check the found ads in the local newspaper and place a lost ad. If
you offer a reward, do not disclose the amount.
FOUND PETS:
If you find a cat or dog, please bring it to a local shelter or
veterinarian to have it scanned for a microchip.
You are strongly urged to relinquish the animal to a shelter, as the
owner may be looking for it. You can request the animals ID
number to check back if you are interested in adopting it.
PET LOSS PREVENTATIVES:
Purchase a dog license at any MCACC facility and attach it to
your dog’s collar. Keep the collar on your dog at all times.
Purchase and ID tag for your cat and attach it to their collar.
Consider having your pet micro-chipped. It acts as a permanent
ID. Be sure to keep the microchip updated with any change of
address or phone number information to the company.
