Welcome to the Bridger-Teton National Forest
We hope that your visit to the Jackson Ranger District is a memorable one. Please be safe
and do your part to respect the land, wildlife and other people
1. Where can I use my MOTOR VEHICLE? Ride or drive only on designated routes
shown on the Motor Vehicle Use Map. Your cooperation will help protect road and trail
surfaces, reduce resource impacts, and retain the abundance and diversity of wildlife
Jackson Hole is known for. (CFR 261.13).
If you have an off road vehicle, the State of Wyoming requires a permit to use roads and
trails enrolled in the State ORV program. Permits can be obtained from many vendors in
the Jackson and Moran area. All funding goes back into trail maintenance and education
programs to benefit ORV riders. (CFR 261.15(i))
2. Are there BEARS? Yes. Both grizzly and black bear activity has increased in this area.
Food storage regulations apply to much of the Bridger-Teton National Forest (all of
Blackrock Ranger District and all of Jackson Ranger District except for Willow Creek area
½ mile south of the Hoback River). Keep people and bears safe by maintaining a clean
camp and keep attractants unavailable to bears. (CFR 261.58(cc))
3. Can I have a CAMPFIRE? Yes, but choose campsite with a pre-existing fire ring. Never
leave your fire unattended. Have plenty of water available to put out your fire. Completely
extinguish your fire at night and before you leave camp. Many forest fires have started
from abandoned campfires that were not completely put out. (CFR 261.5(d))
4. Let’s talk TRASH and POOP. Undeveloped forest areas have no bathrooms or garbage
facilities. Please don’t burn glass and metal in your campfire. Pack it out. (CFR 261.11(b))
Dig cat holes to bury human waste at least 100 feet from water sources. Leaving exposed
human waste and toilet paper is unsanitary and ruins the experience for others. (CFR
261.11(b))
5. How long can I STAY? The maximum length of occupancy at any site is five days in
most areas of the Jackson Ranger District from May 1 – Labor Day. Camping is prohibited
in the Snake River corridor (except in developed campgrounds) and in areas near the
towns of Jackson and Wilson. After 5 days, a minimum of 30 days is required before
returning to another campsite on the District. Living on the Forest is prohibited. This gives
everyone an opportunity to use the area. (CFR 261.58(a))
6. PLAY, CLEAN, GO. Help prevent the spread of invasive plants and animals. Clean your
vehicle and gear before entering and when leaving the area. Clean and dry fishing gear to
prevent aquatic invasive species. Use only certified weed-free hay. (CFR 261.58(t))
7. Recreational Shooting. Target shooting is permitted in many areas but responsible,
safe use is essential to maintain access for this activity. Know your backdrop. Do not shoot
across roads, trails, and bodies of water or near residential areas and campgrounds.
Explosives or exploding targets are not allowed. Bring a target – don’t shoot trees, signs or
other natural features and please, pack out trigger trash. Shooting is not permitted in the
Swinging Bridge area. (CFR 261.52(b), 261.10(d)).
