The College of Arts and Humanities is pleased to announce the 2018–19 Graduate Studies Award for Underrepresented Minority
Students. Underrepresented Minority can be dened as a group whose percentage of the population in a given group is lower than their
percentage of the population in the country. At many colleges and universities, underrepresented minorities are generally considered to
include: Hispanic/Latinos, African Americans, Native Americans, Native Hawaiian/Pacic Islanders, and those of two or more races. This is a
one-time award given to one student in the English, History, and Music Graduate Programs and can be used for professional/academic travel,
books, and/or supplies.
Applications Accepted April 1– June 1, 2018

Criteria
Applicants should:
• Have successfully been accepted into the UWG Graduate
School Program and admission to the graduate program in
either English, History, or Music
• Be in good academic standing
• Be an Underrepresented Minority Student
• Be enrolled or planning to be enrolled in at least 3 hours of
graduate course work

• Statement of Interest and Need
• One Letter of Recommendation
• *Music applicants must complete Qualifying Examination and
a Performance Evaluation. Music Applicants should contact Dr.
Dawn McCord for additional details.
Submission and Selection Process
• Applications and required materials should be submitted in printed form via hard copies or electronically via email to the applicant’s
Graduate Program Director by 5:00pm on June 1, 2018
• Applications will be reviewed by the graduate faculty in the applicant’s respective eld
• Departments will evaluate candidates based on the strength of the applications submitted, including undergraduate work, performance
demonstration through grade point average, letters of recommendation, and letter of interest
• Selections will be made by June 11, 2018. Selected students will be notied shortly thereafter.
• Selected students will receive their $500 award in August 2018
• Selected students will be required to complete a W-9 Taxpayer Identication Number and Certication form in order to receive their funds.
Mentoring and Leadership Expectations
Fellowship recipients will be expected to attend mentoring and leadership events sponsored by the College of Arts and Humanities, the
UWG Graduate School, and the Center for Diversity and Inclusion. For more information on these events, please contact one of the program
