Dialectical Behavior Therapy
Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is an evidence-based psychotherapy designed to help people
increase their emotional and cognitive regulation. It does so by aiding a person in recognizing the triggers
that lead to reactive states along with helping them assess which coping skills to apply in the sequence of
events, thoughts, feelings, and behaviors involved, which aids them in avoiding undesired reactions.
DBT skills are taught on a weekly basis in a 1.5-hour group session. DBT skills groups are not traditional
process groups where people share feelings, thoughts, opinions, and simply discuss them. Rather, a DBT
skills group is much more like a class on emotional intelligence. Sharing can, and does, happen plus
members can be supportive of one another as far as they are comfortable; however, the group is about
learning DBT skills in a classroom style format.
Every group session starts with a mindfulness activity followed by check-ins and homework review, a
presentation of a new skill, and homework assignment. When presenting a new skill, handouts are given
and experiential exercises are conducted as well, in order to facilitate the learning process.
DBT specifically focuses on providing therapeutic skills in four key areas:
Mindfulness: Focuses on improving an individual’s ability to accept and be present in the current
moment. (Practiced during each session and is a part of each course).
Distress Tolerance: Is geared toward increasing a person’s tolerance of negative emotions, rather
than trying to escape from the. (Dates: September 3
