Minimum Student Requirements to Participate in MDC School of Science STEM Research Institute
(SRI):
Please checkmark that you meet the following requirements:
I have a minimum GPA of 2.5 and am in good academic standing.
I am an active and enrolled STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) degree-seeking
student at MDC. NOTE: Health Sciences (i.e. pre-med, pre-dental, pre-pharmacy) are not considered STEM for
SRI. Students graduating prior to the summer semester and non-degree seeking students are not eligible to
participate.
I have completed a minimum of five (5) credits in any of the STEM disciplines.
I am enrolled in at least six (6) (summer term) pathway/major-related credits at MDC (must provide paid
summer 2020 schedule prior to beginning research).
I have included one (1) letter of recommendation from a STEM faculty member and my essay.
I am committed to completing the deliverables stated by the program and those agreed upon with my
faculty mentor.
I am willing to travel to another campus, university or designated work location, as needed, and as agreed
upon with the faculty mentor. I understand that I may not be assigned a mentor at my campus.
I have transportation to attend the mandatory workshops and report to my assigned research location for
the duration of the summer.
I am a Citizen of the United States, National of the United States (as defined in Section 101 (a) of the
Immigration and Nationality Act), Alien admitted as a refugee under Section 207 of the Immigration and
Nationality Act, or Alien lawfully admitted to the United States for permanent residence.
My academic and work schedule allows me sufficient time to commit to research efforts. (i.e. not taking
too many credits, the timing of classes allows for 20 hours a week of research activities).
I have completed the FAFSA form for the 2019-2020 academic year.
Students selected to participate in MDC School of Science STEM Research Program agree to:
1. Work with their mentor to agree upon a weekly schedule and the student is required to devote their
full efforts to their projects during the time they are in the lab.
2. Adhere to that schedule. A bi-weekly time-sheet and summary of activities will be verified and signed by
their faculty mentor and submitted to the School of Science staff.
3. May receive a stipend, dependent on completion of all deliverables, paid in two installments, with final
disbursement on September 26, 2020, at the STEM Research Symposium. Final abstracts are due no
later than August 10, 2020 and scientific posters are due no later than August 24, 2020. All stipends
will be processed based on approval and certification by the faculty mentor and grant staff.
4. Complete a minimum of 240 research hours, during the summer semester.
5. Maintain a detailed professional journal (scientific notebook) appropriate to the research activity being
conducted. Students will record their efforts, activity, and/or progress daily/weekly (depending upon
schedule/activity). This may be reviewed by the mentor and/or grant staff at any time.
6. Participate in professional development workshops covering topics that may include: research ethics,
experimental design and data analysis, conducting effective online research, and abstract and scientific
poster writing. Professional development hours will count towards the 220 required hours of research.

7. Provide weekly updates to faculty mentor. This report should be in the student lab report format
or as directed by the faculty mentor.
8. Maintain professional conduct while working with all members of the research community and other
students. Students’ performance will be evaluated by faculty at the end of the research period. Students
must receive a satisfactory evaluation in order to receive their stipend.
9. Commit to the following deliverables, comply, and complete the requirements of the program:
a. Students must attend orientation prior to beginning their research.
b. Students must complete all professional development workshops.
c. Students must submit a written abstract and a scientific poster.
d. Students must attend and present their research at the Annual STEM Research Symposium on
Saturday, September 26, 2020.
e. Students must visit the Writing Center on their campus to have their abstracts and poster content
reviewed for grammar and style prior to submission to the faculty mentor.
10. All abstracts, posters, and presentations must be reviewed and receive WRITTEN approval
from the faculty mentor prior to submission.
11. Students’ performance must be evaluated as “satisfactory” at the end of the research period
by their faculty mentor.
12. Students may be invited to travel to conferences during the research period if they are selected to present
their research. Students selected for travel must also meet Student Life criteria.
13. Students should participate and complete evaluative surveys or interviews of research experience.
