Recap today’s lesson with one or more of the
following questions:
How did using a visual model help you to
solve the problem?
How did using rational numbers help you to
solve the problem?
What would you do differently to solve the
problem correctly in the future?
Apply and demonstrate your
understanding of rational numbers
by using a number line.

Directions: Draw and label a number line with the rational numbers in the table. Compare
the rational numbers to answer the questions.
1. a. Mrs. Vinton is planting a vegetable garden from seeds. Each
vegetable seed will be planted at different depths. Use the number line
to label the depth at which each seed will be planted. Compare the
rational numbers and answer the questions.
b. Write an inequality that compares the depths of the asparagus and
chicory seeds.
c. Write an inequality that compares the depths of the chicory and
arugula seeds.
d. A few weeks after planting, the pumpkin sprout was the opposite
distance above ground than its seed. Label the point on the number
line. What is its height?

2. a. Mr. Chun rewards his students with class money called Chun Change.
Students can spend their Chun Change for special privileges. Mr. Chun
gives his students extra practice with rational numbers by issuing
change in increments of $0.20. Sometimes he allows students to spend
more money than they have, and students must repay the debt. Today,
these are the account balances for the students at Table 4.
Use the number line to label the account balance for each student. Compare
the rational numbers and answer the questions.
b. Who has more Chun Change, Lashaundra or Sumiko? Write an inequality
and explain how you know your answer is correct.
c. Who has less Chun Change, Araceli or Barney? Write the inequality and
explain how you know your answer is correct.
d. Tomorrow, if Javier spends enough change to have the opposite amount
of change he has today, what will his account balance be?
Student Name

Javier $1.20
Araceli -$0.60
Lashaundra -$2.40
Barney $0.20
Sumiko -$1.80
