PARENT INFORMATION
Who is considered a parent?
Parent” refers to the dependent students biological or adoptive parent. Grandparents, foster parents, legal guardians, older siblings, uncles, and aunts
are NOT considered parents on this form unless they have legally adopted you. Parents are considered married, regardless of gender, if the parents are considered legally married in
the state or other jurisdiction in which the marriage took place (where the parent currently lives does not affect whether the marriage is recognized as legal). You must provide required
information for BOTH parents if they meet any of the following criteria: a) your parents are married, b) your parent has married or remarried (provide information for your parent and his/
her spouse), c) your parents are unmarried but living together, d) your parents are separated but living together, or e) your parents are divorced but living together. If your parents are
unmarried, divorced, or separated and do not live together, provide information for the parent with whom you lived more during the past 12 months. If you lived the same amount of
time with each parent, provide information for the parent who provided more financial support during the past 12 months or during the most recent 12 months that you actually received
support from a parent. The U.S. Department of Education requires dependent students to provide parental information if they want to be considered for all federal aid programs. For
more information, visit www.studentaid.ed.gov.
In general, being self-sufficient, paying your own expenses, not living with your parents, or your parent(s)’ refusal to provide their information, does not automatically make you an
independent student. If you think you have special circumstances, please contact the financial aid office for more information.
Please note that federal student aid is awarded each academic year (July
1
June 30). For example, the 2019-20 FAFSA will allow you to apply
for aid to be used July
1,
2019 June 30 2020. The 2020-21
FAFSA will allow you to apply for aid to be used July
1,
2020 June 30, 2021.
