EACS Technology Newsletter October 8, 2021
1. For teachers in grades K-12: District Expectations for the use of Canvas in the first
quarter of the school year are to build the class(es), add students, and begin posting weekly lesson
plans/newsletters. Teachers should learn to utilize the eLearning module process for the virtual
classes. The module process is more efficient for students, parents, and teachers; please talk with
your Tech Coach if you don’t yet know how to utilize the eLearning module in Canvas.
2. For all staff: The East Allen County Board of SchoolTrustees approved some minor changes
to the district’s Acceptable Use Policy (AUP). Every staff member has agreed to follow the policies
in the AUP, and so please note the changes, with added words/phrases highlighted in green and
deleted words/phrases struck through and highlighted in yellow. To view the document, users must
be logged in to their EACS Google account. Please direct any questions to Tech Director, Keith
Madsen.
3. For all new teachers, or teachers who want to brush up on Canvas: Here is a free,
Canvas Basics course, created by Canvas, just for you. The course is self-paced and not
facilitated, but is structured in such a way that you must complete the modules and content in
the order presented. Each of the four modules will contain formative assessments that help
you gauge your retention of the information presented. A summative assessment is provided
at the end of the entire course. An 80% competency is required toearn a digital badge
issued by Instructure through Badgr. If you completethe course, please contact
Mackenna Moore, and you will also receive 3 PGPs from the Technology Department.
4. For all teachers and administrators: Are you familiar with Canvas’s Study Hall? Study Hall
is Canvas’s free K-12 resource for teachers and administrators. Study Hall is filled with resources
such as Canvas’s free Panda Pro workshops, Assessing Student Learning Amid Disruption, 5
Ways to Help Students Stressed by Assessment, and Canvas Studio Guide, K-12 Edition. Study
Hall also provides resources on upcoming Canvas events, such as InstructureCon this week.
Fun technology fact: You have heard of quantum computers, but do you KNOW how
much different they are compared to normal computers? Watch this video.
(4:42) The video encapsulates a team from Google trying to demonstrate
“Quantum Supremacy”, which is the proof that a quantum computer is greater
and faster than a conventional computer. The Google team gave the quantum
computer a computation, which the greatest conventional supercomputer in the
world would require 10,000 years to compute, and the quantum computer
completed the task in 200 SECONDS! THIS is the future of computing, and
where our best and brightest comp-sci students should be looking. This is a
game changer. And yes, that image is the quantum computer...
