Assistantships and Fellowships
are awarded primarily on the
basis of a student’

record, potential as a degree
candidate, and demonstrated
leadership, teaching, or research
activities. Applicants must be
formally admitted to a graduate
degree program at Wichita State
University. Students admitted on
probation or placed on academic
probation following admission are
not eligible for such awards.

Appointment as a Graduate Teaching Assistant (GTA) requires that non-native speakers of English attain a
minimum score of 50 on the Test of Spoken English (TSE). All GTAs must have their spoken English competency
assessed with the Spoken English Screening Form (SESF) by two faculty members and one student.

Assistantships provide cash
stipends and may include tuition
assessment at
resident rates for
graduate level course work.
Students awarded a Graduate
Teaching Assistantship may
qualify for up to 100 percent
waiver of their graduate tuition.
The actual dollar amount of an
assistantship varies according to
the type and length of the
appointment, the number of hours
worked each week, and the
funding base within each program
area. At Wichita State University,
assistantships for twenty hours of
work per week, for a semester
appointment range from $2620 -
$3676.
Fellowship selections are made
on a competitive basis without
regard to race,
creed, gender, or
national origin. The individual
program area determines the
award amounts.
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES OF
ASSISTANTSHIPS
A Graduate Teaching
Assistant (GTA) directs
instruction or assists with
instruction. Appointment as
a GTA requires non-native
speakers of English to attain
a minimum score of 50 on
the Test of Spoken English.
A Graduate Research
Assistant (GRA) assists
faculty with their scholarly
research and creative
activities.
A Graduate Staff Assistant
(GSA) ass

in either non-teaching or
non-research activities.
