Who’s Got the Best Price? Does it Matter?
Internet Scavenger Hunt! Name: _________________________________
Marketing, connecting buyers and sellers, ultimately comes down to pricing – not too high, not to low,
“just right”. For some products, a lower price means people demand more. These are called “normal”
goods. For other products, when the price is low, people demand less. Those are called “luxury”
goods. Successful marketing means carefully setting price.
Some marketers use a business model based on discount pricing – they promote themselves as being
“low” priced. Others know that their customers will pay more and they happily do this as long as they
value “being the first” to own, or believe that higher prices means quality and customer service.
Today, we will do web searches – using sellers of your choice, chose a specific product for each of the
items below (brand, model). Remember, we want to compare different pricing on the SAME product.
Please identify the exact product you are going to research and identify 2 sellers with 2 different prices
– one higher one lower. YOU DO NOT HAVE TO FIND THE HIGHEST OR LOWEST PRICE, just 2
different prices.
List the higher price and the source – just use the root name of the online retailer (example:
amazon.com or overstock.com). The list the lower price and its source. When you are done, please
answer the last question on the form: Why do you think different retailers can be successful with
different prices for the exact same product?
