WINTHROP UNIVERSITY - OFFICE OF FINANCIAL AID
ELIGIBILITY INFORMATION - SUMMER 2020
To be considered for summer financial aid, you must:
o Have a 2019-2020 Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) on file at Winthrop University.
o Be a Winthrop University student enrolled in an approved degree program.
o Meet the Satisfactory Academic Progress policy requirements at the end of the spring 2020 term.
Federal Direct Student and/or PLUS Loans
o To receive Federal Direct loans, you must enroll at least half-time (6 hours for undergraduates/4.5 hours
for graduates) during the summer term.
o You will only qualify for Federal Direct Student Loan funds if you have not used your maximum yearly
award during fall 2019 or spring 2020.
Federal Pell Grant (undergraduate students)
o Students who have received their entire Pell Grant allotment for 2019-2020, who will be attending
summer at least half-time (six hours), may be eligible for additional Pell Grant funds. Please note that
this amount will not be enough to cover the cost of summer tuition. This funding will count towards
the twelve term maximum of Pell Grant funding.
o Students who have not received their entire Pell Grant allotment for 2019-2020, may be eligible to
receive remaining Pell Grant eligibility in the summer.
Disbursement of Funds
o Financial aid disbursement in the summer begins after the add/drop date of each summer session (this is
typically the third day of the session).
a. Student loan funds will not be disbursed to your account until the beginning of the session in
which you become enrolled at least half-time. For example, if you enroll in three hours A
session and three hours C session, your aid will disburse after drop/add of C session.
b. Pell grant funds will not be disbursed to your account until the beginning of the session in which
you become enrolled in enough hours to match your Pell grant award. For example, if your Pell
grant award requires 12 hours and you do not begin your last class until session D, your Pell
grant will not disburse until the after the add/drop of session D.
Payment
o You are responsible for paying the tuition, fees, and housing/meal plan (if applicable) charged to your
account for the summer term(s) even if you do not receive financial aid.
o You are responsible for paying any charges on your student account that result as a change of
enrollment status.

o Financial aid recipients are expected to complete each summer session in which they are receiving
financial aid. If you withdraw from classes, or fail to earn a passing grade, you may have an adjustment
to your financial aid award. More information can be found on the WU Policy Repository
(https://apps.winthrop.edu/policyrepository/Policy/FullPolicy?PID=292).
o You are responsible for paying any charges on your student account or repaying financial aid that may
result due to your withdrawal.
