WHAT IS A STUDENT ASSISANT?
In 2003 the North Carolina General Assembly passed a law allowing high school students to work in
the polls on Election Day if they meet certain requirements.
Student assistants are appointed by election and carry some of the same responsibilities as election
officials. Students are assigned to work the station specific to their training.
AM I ELIGIBLE?
In order to serve as a North Carolina Student Election Assistant, a student must:
Be a United States citizen
Be at least 17 years old by Election Day
Be a resident of Alexander County
Be enrolled in a public or private high school or home school
Be in good academic standing
Have permission from your parent, guardian or legal custodian
Have permission from your school principal or director
Attend at least one training class
THINGS I NEED TO KNOW ABOUT ELECTION DAY
Be aware, officials are not allowed to leave the voting place and return for any reason.
Bring medications and personal items you may need during the day.
Arrange for enough food and drinks for the day.
Wear comfortable clothing and dress for varying weather conditions.
Leave your campaign buttons and any political wear at home.
Discussion of politics is not permitted while working the polls.
WILL I GET PAID?
Yes, Student Assistants are paid for their time spent in training and for working Election Day.
