Project Learning Tree activities connecting the outdoors to the classroom.

upon arrival. All participants should wear closed toe shoes.

Optional hike in the woods
“Explorers– 4th grade and up Up to 120 students

Three activities - Wetlands, Woodlands, & Wildlife*
Activities are at learning stations throughout the hike

"Teacher-guided Wetlands Adventurers Tour" – 4th grade and up Up to 120 students

Three teacher-guided activities - Functions/Types of Wetlands, Exploring a Pond Habitat, and
Black Swamp Adventure
School chaperoned activities are at learning stations throughout the hike

1. Grade Level - K-2 Dragonflies Program Students Rotate Through 3 Activity Stations
Children’s Garden 25 minutes
Learn about the plants in the garden, beneficial insects (pollinators, decomposers) and non-
beneficial insects (aphids, stink bugs, and walking sticks.)
Trees Are Our Friends 25 minutes
Learn about the life cycle of trees, tree products, and how trees help us live.
Trees and People 25 minutes Students learn how trees and people are alike and the parts
of a tree on a short trail walk.
2. Grade Level - 3rd – 7th Foresters Program Descriptions
Invasive Species 30 minutes- How invasive species disrupt life cycles.
Every Tree for Itself/Tree Cookies 30 minutes Resources trees need, competition, and
read tree rings.
Life on the Edge 30 minutes- Learn that habitat loss is the primary reason for the loss of
species.
What’s in the Woods Hike 1.5 hours. Observe and learn about Louisiana native flora and
fauna through a docent led hike through the Burden Woods.
3. Grade Level 4th-7th - Explorers Program Description
Wetlands -- 30 minutes-- Importance of wetlands in Louisiana.
Wildlife -- 30 minutes-- Learn the indicators for wildlife in our woods.
Forestry -- 30 minutes -- Learn to identify some native trees and estimate age of tree.
4. "Teacher-guided Wetlands Adventurers Tour"- Students visit the Mosaic Boardwalk at Black
Swamp with stops at information stations. After the Boardwalk tour, students visit science experiment
stations monitored by teachers and school chaperons to learn more about wetlands
