The Town of Telluride and the
Historic & Architectural Review Commission’s
2019 Preservation Awards
Established in 2008, the Telluride Preservation Awards are presented periodically by the Town of
Telluride and the Historic and Architectural Review Commission (HARC) to recognize those who
have contributed to the preservation of Telluride’s National Historic Landmark District. Nominees
are judged on their project’s enhancement of the overall design of the community and protection of
the traditional character of the town. Awards are presented in the following categories:
Rehabilitation & Restoration
Rehabilitation involves returning a property to a condition which makes a contemporary use
possible while preserving its character-defining features. Rehabilitation may also include the
adaptive reuse of a building. This category acknowledges the proper restoration of a rated
structure to an earlier or original appearance. Projects must fully demonstrate adherence to the
Secretary of Interior’s Standards for Rehabilitation. This category may include the preservation
of a residential structure or a non-residential structure.
Most Compatible Addition
To acknowledge a compatible addition and alteration to a rated structure which respects the
defining features that characterize the property and that best meets the Secretary of the
Interior’s Standard for Rehabilitation #9: New additions, exterior alterations, or related new
construction shall not destroy historic materials that characterize the property. The new work
shall be differentiated from the old and shall be compatible with the massing, size, scale, and
architectural features to protect the historic integrity of the property and its environment.
Most Compatible Infill
Infill is defined as a building that is designed to replace missing structures, or otherwise fill gaps
in the streetscape. This category will acknowledge new construction projects that architecturally
and aesthetically complement the historic context of the existing neighborhood.
Continuing Preservation
To acknowledge rated structures (Contributing or Supporting) that have been continually
maintained at a high level of preservation over time.
Eligibility:
Eligible projects must have been started after January 1, 2015, and completed (a
Certificate of Occupancy received) prior to May 6, 2019.
All categories are open to residential, commercial, or mixed-use projects.
The Town of Telluride award program is open to any individual, organization,
business or agency within the Town of Telluride limits.
The same applicant may nominate more than one building in the same review cycle.
A property owner may nominate his or her own building. Owners of properties, if not
the applicant, must provide written consent.
All projects must have been constructed and issued a Certificate of Occupancy prior
to being nominated for an award.
A property owned by HARC, P&Z, and Town Council members may be eligible for
an award during the member’s active service. Such member may not act on or
influence the Evaluation Committee.
The Town of Telluride has the right to refuse any application that is not completed
as requested.
Judging:
All awards will be based on the quality of the project, its presentation, significance
and uniqueness. The impact of the nominee’s project on the community will also be
considered.
If the Evaluation Committee feels that the nomination is better suited for another
category, then the jury may change the nominated project to that category.
All of the Evaluation Committee’s decisions are final.
Additional materials may be requested.
All applicants will be notified by mail or email as to the status of their nomination.
The Evaluation Committee may grant multiple awards within the same category on
a case-by-case basis. There is no established minimum or maximum number of
awards that can be granted in any one category.
Evaluation Committee:
Nominations are evaluated by an Evaluation Committee composed of HARC members
who have no role or interest in the nominated projects. Review and designation of
Preservation Awards may be conducted as part of a regular HARC meeting. Preservation
Department Staff will provide administrative support to the Evaluation Committee.
Nominations will be judged according to the specific criteria:
1. Adherence to the ten Secretary of the Interior’s Standards for Rehabilitation;
2. Adherence to the Design Guidelines for Building in Telluride, specifically the
Standards for Rehabilitation of Historic Buildings;
3. Scope & complexity of project; and
