TOWER LIGHTING REQUEST

The City of Weslaco lights the Water Tower for City events, traditions and National
events/holidays such as Veteran’s Day, Memorial Day, and Christmas.
In addition to lighting for annual holidays and national/citywide events, the City also will
consider special occasion lighting requests that meet the following criteria:
• Application must support a local, national or international awareness issue that
builds local community or is related to community health (Breast Cancer
Awareness)
• Application must support an event of local, regional or national significance (such
as Flag Day or Veterans Day)
• Application must support a local festival that is formally supported by the City or
an event that positively impacts local community spirit (such as Onion Fest or
National Night Out)
• Lighting is limited to a 24-hour period, typically from dusk until dawn, subject to
the operational parameters of the light feature.
The City maintains traditional lightings for the religious holidays of Easter and Christmas. The
City will not light for religious figures, religious organizations, or additional religious holidays.
The City of Weslaco has sole discretion over which lighting requests are approved.
The City is under no obligation to provide specific feedback to an individual/organization
regarding the status, merit and/or denial of its application.
The City will not consider requests that contradict a City policy or bylaw, or requests that
are personal, political or commercial in nature.
Requests must be turned in more than two weeks in advance for review to the Parks and
Recreation Department. The City of Weslaco does not accept lighting requests more than 6
months in advance of the requested lighting date.
In the case that a request is made with short notice (less than 2 weeks), the Mayor has
authority to approve or deny such request(s).
Lighting is limited to observance of a single occasion or event per day, except two Weslaco
football teams may be recognized concurrently subject to the operational ability.
In the event that there are multiple requests for the same day, the earliest request received (that
meets the criteria) will be selected. The Mayor may approve no more than two occasions for a
single day. Lighting style will be subject to the operational parameters of the light feature.
