organized. If you take your
notebook home to review, please
bring it back to class.

SEQUENCE AND
SCOPE
Hello, today I am going to share with you my process to plan a sequence and
scope for the school year. I teach PK-6 grade and I see most of my classes twice a
week.
Sometimes it is hard for teachers like us (who do not see their students on a daily
basis) to have a sequence and plan for the school year.
I have broken down my "sequence and scope" system in 10 easy steps for you to
plan for your school year. I hope this helps.
THE BASICS Determine the age,
level and hours you see each class. Another
important point is to determine your students’ exposure to
Spanish outside the
classroom. This will give you a better idea of the pace and objectives of your plan.
THE TIMING Are you going to plan each theme per week, month, semester?
Personally I like to plan one theme per month or 5 weeks. This way you can
practice without the kids feeling bored about the same topic.
THE OBJECTIVES Set realistic objectives based on your schedule, students’ level
and resources. Yes, I would love my class to
have the same scope and sequence
as a Dual Immersion class, but the reality is that I do not see my students every
day. The objectives could be the same, but the pace is going to be different.
YOUR SOURCES Check standards from ACTFL or your state. This will give you a
common ground when preparing your scope. You can check a couple of age
appropriate textbooks to check some themes and ideas too.
THE
CORE The “skeleton” of your scope should be high frequency words and
super 7 verbs (or sweet 16 for older students). I like to choose 6-8 high frequency
words and maybe 2 verbs to plan a unit around that. Check the link in my bio to go
to the blog where I found this list of High Frequency Words.
SEQUENCE AND SCOPE FOR K-6 SPANISH TEACHERS
THE EXTRAS Now is time to find your theme, and choose 6-8 vocabulary words to
this unit. For K-2 I use 6-8 words, for 3-6 I use 10-12 words per unit. Remember
these words are extras. Your main focus are high frequency words and high
frequency verbs.
EXPRESSIONS AND COMMUNICATION Based on your selection of high
frequency words and vocabulary. Choose the expressions you are planning to
teach. Incorporate everything to help your students communicate. Remember to
teach words and vocabulary in context, not isolated words, the goal is
communication.
RECYCLE For your next units, recycle some of your high frequency words or verbs.
The idea is to master the high frequency words and verbs on each unit, so you can
use them sporadically on your next units.
MORE EXTRAS? If you need to add a new verb/word not included in your scope (a
high frequency word) make sure to give a word bank so your students know what
the word means.
CULTURE: Remember to make your cultural element meaningful, relevant and non
stereotypical.
This “system” was created based on a need to create a unique sequence for K-6
Spanish Teachers. Teachers who might not see their students on a daily basis. If
you find this useful, feel free to share the video with colleagues. Please do not
create derivative resources for profit or commercial use based on this
information I am sharing with you for free. It is just not right.
High Frequency Verbs list shown in my IGTV video belongs to this blog: http://
