STUDENT APPLICATION
Students and student nurses are disregarded for Council Tax purposes, and this could
entitle you to a discount/exemption on your Council Tax bill.
The term student for Council Tax purposes covers the following situations:
Students enrolled on a university or college course which lasts for at least one
academic or calendar year. The course must require attendance for at least 24
weeks and the student must be required to undertake periods of study, tuition
or work experience which together amount to an average of at least 21 hours
per week in each academic or calendar year
Young people under the age of 20 who are undertaking a course (not higher
education) which lasts for at least 3 months and which at least 12 hours per
week to be spent on the relevant activities of the course
Foreign language assistants whilst they are appointed as such at a school or
college anywhere in Great Britain, provided that they are registered with the
British Council
Student nurses – either those studying at university at college or those following
a course leading to an appropriate registration under the Nurses, Midwives and
Health Visitors Act 1979.
If the resident student meets the criteria within the description above, the Council will
require proof of this by means of a certificate/confirmation issued by the
university/college/school.
If you believe you may qualify for a discount/exemption please complete the enclosed
application form and return it together with the student certificate/evidence.
