DEPARTMENT OF SOCIOLOGY SCHOLARSHIP AND AWARD INFORMATION SHEET
SOCIOLOGY SCHOLARSHIPS
Scholarships are designed to help cover your educational expenses next year. In order to be eligible for Sociology or
university scholarships, then, you must be continuing as a full-time student in Fall 2018.
Barbara Holland Peevers Memorial Scholarship
This is a need-based scholarship for students majoring in Sociology with a minimum Chico State GPA of 3.0 who
will have completed at least 60 units by the start of Fall 2018. Your essay for this scholarship should outline your
academic goals and identify how winning the scholarship will help you. This award is based on a family
investment fund and the amount awarded will vary each year depending on the interest earned, but is typically
$1500.
Travis Williams Humanitarian Scholarship
This scholarship honors a student who has shown dedication to the betterment of society through community
involvement locally or elsewhere. Applicants should have completed at least 60 units by the start of Fall 2018,
and have a minimum Chico State GPA of 2.0. This scholarship is not based on need. Essays for this scholarship
should address the work you have done to improve the lives of others. One scholarship of $500 may be given.
Applications will be accepted, but the scholarship may not be awarded because of funding.
SCHOLARSHIP APPLICATION REQUIREMENTS AND PROCEDURES
To apply for either of the Sociology scholarships above, you must complete both of the following:
1. The university application, which must be completed online at www.csuchico.edu/fa. The university application
asks for some basic information, as well as short answers to a handful of open-ended questions about yourself
and your accomplishments. Please note that the university application suggests that it may be beneficial for a
faculty member to submit a letter of recommendation for you. The deadline for the university application
(including the letter of recommendation) is February 15, 2018.
2. The departmental application to the Department of Sociology, which consist of filling out an Awards Application
Cover Sheet, and writing a brief, one-to-two-page essay specific to the scholarship(s) to which you are applying.
The Application Cover Sheet is available in the Sociology department office located in 615 Butte Hall, or online at
https://www.csuchico.edu/soci/resources/scholarships.shtml. The deadline to turn in this essay and its
accompanying cover sheet is 5:00 p.m. on March 10, 2018. Please submit it to the Sociology Department, Butte
Hall Room 615.
If you apply for more than one scholarship, you will only need to complete one online application, and one departmental
application (which includes the coversheet and an essay). Scholarship applicants are strongly encouraged to also apply
for Sociology Department Awards.
SOCIOLOGY DEPARTMENT AWARDS
To be eligible for a Sociology Department Award, you must be a full-time enrolled sociology major during
Spring 2018. Unlike the Sociology Scholarships, however, you do not have to be continuing as a Chico State
student in Fall 2018 in order to apply. Sociology minors may apply for the Educational Enhancement Award.
W.E.B. duBois Award
This award recognizes Sociology juniors or seniors who have overcome obstacles and challenges in life and in
their educational pursuits. Students with a minimum 3.0 Chico State GPA may apply. Essays should address the
obstacles you have overcome, your commitment to Sociology, and how the award will contribute to the
completion of your degree.
Robert P. Rankin Award
This award recognizes students who have put their sociological knowledge into action through a civic
engagement project, activism, community-based research, or leadership in a campus or community
organization. Applicants should be Sociology majors with a Chico State GPA of 3.0 or higher who will graduate
in the spring, summer or fall of 2018. Essays should describe how you have applied your sociological knowledge
in hands-on ways for the benefit of others.
Exceptional Academic Achievement Award(s)
This award honors a student for outstanding academic achievement. Applicants should be Sociology majors
whose Chico State GPA is 3.5 or higher, and who will graduate in spring, summer or fall of 2018. Students are
nominated for this award by Sociology faculty. Faculty members must submit a letter of recommendation to the
Awards Committee and inform the student in sufficient time for you to complete the essay, which should
address how your experience in the Sociology program has contributed to your worldview and how you expect
to use your degree to achieve your career objective. If you would like to be nominated for this award, you
should speak with the faculty member who you think can best nominate you.
Educational Enhancement Award
This award is for special use related to expenses for travel to a conference or some other academic event, for
study abroad, or for research or special projects. Sociology majors and minors may apply for this award. Essays
should address your commitment to the field of sociology, and describe what you hope to gain from your plans
to travel, study abroad, or engage in a special project.
Walt Schaefer Outstanding Research Paper Award
To encourage and reward extraordinary research and writing in sociology, this cash award recognizes students
who have completed at least one research paper with a minimum word count of 2,500 including citations, and
an abstract of approximately 100 words. Research should examine primary and/or secondary data collected for
a class assignment or under the direct supervision of a CSU, Chico Sociology faculty member. To qualify, a
student must be a declared Sociology major or minor, have a minimum cumulative GAP of 2.5, and have
completed at least 45 units by the end of spring 2018.
AWARD APPLICATION REQUIREMENTS AND PROCEDURES
To apply for a Sociology Department Award, you must fill out a Sociology Award Cover Sheet, and submit a brief essay of
one-to-two pages (see details of each award). You may apply to more than one award, and only need to write a total of
one essay, but that essay should address the criteria outlined by each of the awards for which you are applying. No
awards are funded by donations made by Sociology faculty members and alumni, and award amounts depend on the
balance in the Awards Fund. The deadline for Sociology Department Award applications is 5:00 p.m. on March 1, 2018.
Please submit all required items to the Sociology Department, Butte Hall 615.
