Student's Name:
The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act of 1974 has amended rules that when a student begins
attending a college or university, the rights previously accorded to the parent(s) shall be accorded to the
student. While a student is in secondary school, the parents of that student have free access to information
about their child. Once a child reaches the age of 18, the rights of the parent(s) to the information pass to the
student.
Southeastern Louisiana University may disclose information to the parent(s) of a student, without the written
consent, only if the student is a dependent as defined in Section 152 of the Internal Revenue Code of 1954.
The required form of proof is an original copy of the parent's tax return showing the student claimed as a
dependent. The payment of a student's tuition by the parent does not give the parent the right of access to a
student's records.
In accordance with FERPA, the University will only disclose information to parent(s) of a dependent student
as defined by Section 153 of the Internal Revenue Code and to those listed below:
