Alternative Literacy Curriculum
The Right to Read Act, A
rk. Code Ann. § 6-17-429, states that a public school district or open-enrollment public charter
school that chooses to purchase a curriculum program that is not from the department's approved list of curriculum
programs shall submit the following to the department for approval of the alternative curriculum program:
(A) A rationale for choosing an alternative curriculum program; and
(B) Evidence-based research regarding the alternative curriculum program.
The
Division of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) Rules Governing the Right to Read Act specify that a
public school district receiving Level 3 - coordinated support, Level 4 - directed support, or Level 5 - intensive support for
reading, may only select an approved curriculum program from the list and may not choose an alternative curriculum
program.
District requests shall include a signed letter from the Superintendent and School Board President requesting approval of
the alternative curriculum program as required by the DESE Rules Governing the Right to Read Act.
