Housing & Residential Life Candidate Checklist
1st Step: Complete the Resident Technical Assistant Application. A completed and typed application must be submitted no
later than Wednesday, February 13, 2013 at 4:50 p.m. Before beginning the application you will need to:
Prepare a current text-only resume (no formatting required) including, but not limited to:
- Previous work experience that would contribute to the position, including titles and dates of experience
- Involvement in extracurricular activities
- Volunteer work or community service
- Honors or awards that you have received
Prepare a personal statement (app. 500 words) addressing all three of the following questions.
1. Describe your on campus housing experience. What you have experienced, learned and participated in, and how has your
experience influenced your desire to apply for the Resident Technical Assistant position.
2. How will you contribute to and support the mission of Housing & Residential Life (HRL) through this position?
3. As a student leader, you will be advocating for and providing resources to students from different cultures, races, sexual
orientations, and abilities than yourself. Please explain honestly how you would be able to connect with these diverse populations of
students and how you have been able to work in teams made up of diverse individuals.

Step: Applications will be reviewed by the selection committee and all qualified applicants will be contacted via phone to
set up an individual interview time sometime between February 18-19, 2013. To aid in the interview schedule process please
complete the interview block time schedule attached to this application. During this interview candidates will be asked to present a
collage that relates to their personality and skills. Instructions about this collage will be given to you prior to your interview.

Step: Position announcements will be mailed by 5:00 p.m. on February 20, 2013.

Step: If you were selected to be a member of the 2013-2014 Housing & Residential Life Staff, an Acceptance of Position
form will also be included with the selection announcement. The Acceptance of Position form will need to be signed and returned to
Housing & Residential Life (SUB 221) by February 20, 2013 at 5:00pm. You will have a picture taken of you at this time so
please plan accordingly.

Step: Training with the current Resident Technical Assistant will take place throughout the remainder of the Spring 2013
semester and the position will take on full time employment during the summer and fall of 2013.

Resident Technical Assistant Position Description
- Computer Lab Support: Responsible for checking the status of both residence hall computer labs Monday-
Friday, including but not limited to the cleaning, dusting, organizing, and disinfecting of the lab areas. This
also includes ensuring there is adequate paper supply at the desks and placing an order for new paper with the
Administrative Associate in the Housing & Residential Life office, as well as ensuring that at least one extra
toner cartridge is available at all times at both desks.
- Availability and Approachability: The RTA must make themselves available for student support often
including checking both RTA Log Books at least twice a day, including the weekends. The RTA must always
be willing to support students and take student inquiries when they are going through the halls.
- Individual Resident Relations: Offer positive support and challenge to residents by providing peer
counseling and advisement in the area of computer technology, and serving as a referral agent to appropriate
university resources as needed. Demonstrate active listening skills, and role model healthy personal behavior,
and acquire working knowledge of student services on campus.
- Leadership: Support the Residence Hall Association and other campus leadership opportunities by attending
and promoting activities, events, and meetings.
- Administration: Complete a weekly checklist of duties and provide a copy of that information to the
immediate supervisor; Assistant Director of Housing & Student Life. The time requirement for these positions
ranges from 10-15 hours/week depending on the overall work load of the service logs. There may be
opportunities for the RTA to be trained in desk operations and take additional hours throughout the semester.
