Motorized Bicycle (Moped) Definition and Restrictions

2. Has an automatic transmission
3. Is capable of a maximum speed of not more than 30 m.p.h
4. Complies with all applicable Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards (M.G.L. c.90§ 1C)
The Registrar has determined that a motorized bicycle can have either two or three wheels in contact with the ground.
If a vehicle does not meet the definition of a motorized bicycle, it cannot be registered as such. Anyone who mis-
registers a motor vehicle as a “motorized bicycle” may be guilty of operating an unregistered, uninsured, uninspected,
and untitled “motor vehicle”, the operator may be cited, and the vehicle may be towed and stored at the owner’s
expense.

the speed of 40 m.p.h., it must be registered as a regular motorcycle.
If the vehicle has not been certified by its manufacturer to meet FMVSS as a motorcycle or motor-driven cycle and is
