Instructions: Please use this form to capture the annual progress toward the goals outlined in your
Committee’s plan. Cite the data you used in developing your plan and any relevant analysis of that data
(i.e. performance gaps). Include your committee’ achievements, along with any challenges you
encountered. Analyze and discuss those achievements and challenges. Perhaps most importantly, outline
any changes you have planned, based on your analysis, that you anticipate will lead to improvement in
student learning and success in your plan area.

Basic Skills Cohort Data from Basic Skills Cohort Tracking Tool and Reading
Apprenticship Pilot data
The cohort tracking tool showed significant increases in the success of students
in English Writing and English Reading, in Mathematics, and in ESL-Integrated
and ESL Reading. There was no significant increase or decrease in ESL
Writing. The Reading Apprenticeship data consisted of pre- and post-
questionnaires given at the beginning and end of the term. In English 908,
students showed remarkable increases in agreement with statements: such
as: "I feel comfortable asking questions and talking out loud about what is
confusing or difficult for me in textbook/class activities; I feel like I belong in this
class and that I am valued here; I know what metacognition is and how to be
metacognitive in this class; reading activities help me improve my performance
in this class. I think reading is an active process where the reader must think
and actively use strategies in order to build understanding." In a Math 903
Elementary Algebra class, pre- and post- questions also showed large
increases in numbers of students strongly agreeing with the statements: "I feel
comfortable asking for help from other students in the class" and "I know how
to have a written conversation with the textbook. I could explain and show this
strategy to someone who didn't know about it."
We took the increases shown by the tracking tool as indicators that we are on
the right track with our BSI activities, especially tutoring. We also are very
excited about the Reading apprenticeship results and are planning to continue
to expand the program at Mission.
We will continue to support tutors in basic skills and ESL classes, especially
embedded tutors. We will continue to support participation in Reading
Apprenticeship training and in faculty inquiry groups where RA-trained faculty
can share challenges and successes.
