Past President’s Scholarship 2022 Application Form
PLEASE READ THE FOLLOWING INFORMATION CAREFULLY AND COMPLETELY.
Scholarship Overview
TRREBs Past Presidents Scholarships are awarded annually to graduating secondary school students pursuing
higher learning, who show an interest in a field related to the real estate industry* while possessing leadership
skills and community service experience or volunteerism.
Scholarship Details
Eight (8) Scholarships totalling $22,000 are awarded annually. Each of the two essay topics (see 4.a. below)
may have a first-, second-, third- and fourth-place winner. The scholarships include:
Two first-place awards of $5,000 each
Two second-place awards of $2,500 each
Two third-place awards of $2,000 each (NEW as of 2022)
Two fourth-place awards of $1,500 each (NEW as of 2022)
Eligibility Requirements
1. This scholarship is applicable to students currently in their final year of an Ontario secondary school
who are pursuing post-secondary education after graduation, for example, at a college, university, or trade
school. Students must currently reside in the province of Ontario and be registered with a secondary school
within the province of Ontario. Applicants must also be a Canadian citizen or have been given permanent
resident status. Applicants applying to a post-secondary school outside of Ontario (or even Canada), are still
eligible for the scholarship. NOTE: Students must currently be enrolled and attending their final year of
secondary school individuals currently taking a gap year are not eligible to apply.
2. Applications must be submitted via email to scholarships@trebnet.net before 3:00 p.m. on Friday, March
25, 2022.
3. Applicants must have a record of academic achievement; show an interest in a field related to the real estate
industry* (see 4.d. below); and possess a range of leadership qualities and community involvement
experience.
4. Applicants MUST complete the Personal Information section (Page 3) of this application form and
submit it together with the following documents:
a. A written essay (minimum of 1500 words/maximum of 1800 words, typed and double-spaced) on one
of the following topics:
i. What does the recent trend of generational wealth transfer from parents (or grandparents) to their
children (or grandchildren) mean for the Greater Toronto Area specifically, demand and competition
in the real estate market, housing supply, and price of homes?
ii. The pandemic’s ripple effects saw some Torontonians and Greater Toronto Area residents opt to
leave downtown cores in search of more space in suburbia or rural areas as working from home
became the new normal. Do you think this shift will continue, or do you think some will decide to
return to downtown areas? What issues or outcomes regarding the economy, housing, and
employment do you see arising out of this movement?
b. If applicable, citations must be present. The style of citation is your choice, for example, MLA, APA or
Chicago. NOTE: Please ensure your essay meets the required 1500-word count minimum/1800-word
count maximum) in order to avoid disqualification. The word count includes your personalized essay
title and the main body text, including section titles, in-text citations and quotations. The word count does

not include the i. or ii. essay topic questions, outline, tables, figures, footnotes, references, or works
cited. After double-checking, adding your word-count total on your optional cover page or at the beginning
or end of your essay is highly recommended.
c. To facilitate the judging process, please do not include any personal information, e.g., your name,
address, and email address, on the individual essay pages (on the optional cover page is fine).
d. A detailed resume outlining academic achievements, an interest in a field related to the real estate
industry*, work experience, volunteer work, and extracurricular activities. *And, at the top of your resume
or in a separate Word or PDF document, in one to three sentences, please explain how your chosen
post-secondary studies and career goals could impact the real estate industry in the future. For
example, whether you are planning to study medicine; engineering; geography; urban planning; law; a
trade, such as plumbing or construction; graphic design; app development, etc., how might your studies
and your career goals affect one or more of the following: future housing and neighbourhood design
and/or development, the home buying and selling processes, or the advancement of the real estate
profession.
e. Two (2) brief letters of reference (including current contact information for each reference). The resume
and letters of reference may be in paragraph, chart, bullet point, etc., format. NOTE: The two reference
letters do not have to be from a past or current secondary school teacher; you may also consider, for
example, the parent(s) of children you babysit, neighbours that you help out, a coach or leader in the
sport(s) or club(s) you participate in, a lifelong family friend who knows you very well, or your supervisor
at a past or present part-time job.
f. Your secondary school academic transcript. (Phone screenshots, scans, etc., of the original transcripts
are sufficient.) NOTE: We understand that the COVID-19 pandemic has impacted how you are attending
secondary school and may also impact the required procurement of your academic transcript. Therefore,
we will accept the academic transcript that you last received from your secondary school.
g. A phone screenshot, scan, PDF, etc., of offer/s of admission to a post-secondary institution/s.
5. You may enter one essay for each topic; however, one person cannot be awarded more than one
scholarship. Duplicate and incomplete submissions will not be considered. If you are submitting an
essay for each topic, only one application is required. All application materials must be submitted in one email
to scholarships@trebnet.net. Email submissions will receive a one-time confirmation. NOTE: Submissions
should sent as individual Word or PDF documents and not as links.
6. All answers must be submitted in English. Answers in other languages will not be read or considered.
7. ONLY the eight (8) scholarship award recipients will be contacted via telephone before June 1, 2022,
concerning the status of their application. All other applicants will be contacted via email after June
10, 2022.
a. A scholarship award of $5,000/not to exceed $5,000 will be paid to each first-place award recipient, a
scholarship award of $2,500/not to exceed $2,500 will be paid to each second-place award recipient, a
scholarship award of $2,000/not to exceed $2,000 will be paid to each third-place award recipient, and a
scholarship award of $1,500/not to exceed $1,500 will be paid to each fourth-place award recipient prior
to the start of the first semester of post-secondary studies.
b. A minimum scoring standard is in effect. If this minimum standard is not met, TRREB has the right to not
award any or all of the eight (8) scholarships.
8. The decision of the judges is final and is not subject to an appeal.
9. Please note that if any information provided by the applicant is determined by The Toronto Regional Real
Estate Board (TRREB) to be inaccurate or misleading, TRREB may cancel or revoke any grant, if awarded, in
its sole discretion and the applicant will be required to reimburse TRREB for the full amount of the grant, if
paid.
11. Recipients of the scholarship awards must agree to:
Provide consent via an email to permit the use of their name/image/essay/secondary school name, etc.,
to be used for promotional purposes by TRREB, and
Freely participate in up to six (6) hours of promotional events on behalf of TRREB. NOTE: Due to the
COVID-19 pandemic, this requirement is currently suspended.

PERSONAL INFORMATION
Although your social insurance number is not required in order to consider your application, we may request that
you provide this information to TRREB in the event that you are selected to receive the scholarship, at which
time, TRREB may be required to report the award to the Canada Revenue Agency.
Please review the Consent to collect, retain, and use my personal information” clause that follows. If you agree
to TRREB using the information contained in your application form for the purposes set out in that clause, please
sign and date the application form where indicated.

Members and the general public that I am a scholarship award winner, if that is the decision of the judging panel,
and for the promotional purposes of TRREB and of the Award program. I further understand that if my application
is accepted for a scholarship, I may be required to provide my social insurance number in order that I may
receive the award, as this information may be required by TRREB for reporting the scholarship award to Canada
Revenue Agency (CRA).
In the event that my application is selected, I hereby consent to my photograph and information contained in this
application being disclosed in the media to announce that I am a scholarship recipient.

All application materials will be kept strictly confidential. The information provided in this application will be used
by TRREB’s judging panel to select the eight (8) successful scholarship recipients.
Your phone number, mailing address and/or email may be used by TRREB to contact you. This information will
not be shared, distributed or sold to any third party. Should you be awarded a scholarship, information from your
application will be used in the media to publicize your win and the award.
Essays will be judged on the following criteria:
Knowledge of the topic
Grammatical accuracy and organization of essay
Originality in approach and treatment of topic
Ability to establish a coherent, convincing response to the topic
Adherence to format and length rules
A minimum scoring standard is in effect. If this minimum standard is not met, TRREB has the right to not award
any or all of the eight (8) scholarships.
