EDUCATIONAL ENRICHMENT OPPORTUNITIES FOR
SELECTED SPECIAL PART-TIME STUDENTS
Title 2, Chapter 5, Article 1, Section 48800 of the California
Education Code provides the following guidelines:
The governing board of any school district may determine
which students would benefit from advanced scholastic or
vocational work. The intent of this section is to provide
educational enrichment opportunities for a limited number of
eligible pupils rather than to reduce current course
requirements of elementary and secondary schools.
Pasadena City College interprets “advanced scholastic” or
enrichment coursework as:
• higher levels of math, language, or science that are not
offered at the student's school.
• fulfilling Pasadena City College general education
requirements.
• college transferable courses.
• courses not available to the student from a school within
his/her district.
Physical education and basic study skill courses are not
considered to be advanced scholastic in nature by
Pasadena City College.
Vocational courses that teach and develop specific skills and
most often relate to job preparation would be interpreted as
enrichment classes if not available to the student at the
student's school or from a school within his/her district.
It is important to remember that:
• the student must demonstrate the ability to benefit from
the instruction.
• the courses that are approved for the student will be
specified on the permit to register and may not total
more than 9 units.
• course prerequisites must have been met and verified
through the PCC counseling/advisement office prior to
the student's registration.
• the student will be creating a permanent academic
record at PCC, even though he/she is concurrently
enrolled in K-12.
• the student is responsible for his/her own progress and
actions as a Pasadena City College student.
• Pasadena City College instructors will not adapt their
curriculum to accommodate an enrichment student.
• the student's privacy is protected, regardless of age, from
third party inquiries. Parents will not be given
information regarding their child's progress.
Please contact the Admissions Office, (626) 585-7394, if you
have questions regarding this program.
Admission and Registration Information
• Enrichment students must submit a completed permission
to register form, official transcripts, and PCC admission
application (if not currently enrolled). We will begin
accepting applications in April to apply for the
summer/fall terms, and in October to apply for the
winter/spring terms. Student may apply online but
must submit the additional required documents in
person.
• Once the permission to register form, official transcripts,
and PCC application (if not currently enrolled) have
been received and processed, the student will receive a
permit to register. The student will be eligible to
register using walk-in registration only. Refer to the
permit to register for the assigned walk-in registration
date and time.
• All concurrent enrollment students are considered new
students each semester and do not qualify for priority
registration status.
• Enrollment fees are waived for concurrent enrollment
students. Students must pay other registration fees,
which include health fees, student body fees, course
material fees, parking permit fees and non-resident
fees if applicable.
• When the student reaches the age of 18, receives a high
school diploma, or passes either the California State
Proficiency Exam or the G.E.D., the student must submit
an application for the following term indicating his/her
new educational status.
