Introduction
Wichita State University Nursing Programs have a responsibility to educate competent nurses to
care for their patients (persons, families and/or communities) with critical judgment, broad-
based knowledge, and well-honed technical skills. All individuals admitted to the Wichita State
University Nursing Programs will be asked to verify that they can meet these standards with or
without accommodation(s).
Wichita State University Nursing Programs provide the following description/examples of
technical standards to inform prospective and enrolled students of a sampling of technical
standards required in completing their nursing science curriculum.
1. These technical standards reflect a sample of the performance abilities and characteristics
that are necessary to successfully complete the requirements of the Nursing Programs.
Please note: the standards are not requirements of admission into the Nursing Programs
and the examples are not all-inclusive.
2. Individuals interested in applying for admission to the Nursing Programs should review
these standards to develop a better understanding of the skills, abilities and behavioral
characteristics required to successfully complete the Programs. Key areas for technical
standards in nursing include certain: (a) sensory and motor coordination and function; (b)
communication skills; (c) observational skills; (d) cognitive skills; and (e) behavioral and
social attributes.

MSN Admission Requirements:
In addition to the general university requirements for admission to graduate studies (see the
Admission to Graduate Study section for full details), the School of Nursing requires:
1. A bachelor’s degree with a major in nursing from a nationally accredited (NLN or CCNE)
school. RN applicants with a degree in another discipline will be considered and counseled
on an individual basis;
2. Admission to the Graduate School at Wichita State University;
3. Coverage by professional liability insurance, in effect during practical, in the minimum
amount of $1/3 million individual/aggregate, to be renewed annually;
4. One year of nursing practice following professional licensure is highly recommended but not
required;
5. Computer literacy and electronic database literature database searching skills.
6. A background check is required. The School of Nursing can provide details for obtaining the
background check; and
7. Evidence of Registered Nurse Licensure, in the in the state for which they practice.
8. A cumulative grade point average of 3.000 or higher in the following area: the last 60 hours
of nursing undergraduate coursework.
a. For applicants who do not have a 3.000 or higher in the last 60 hours of nursing
undergraduate coursework, a MSN Admission Exception Portfolio** may be submitted
to the School of Nursing. This portfolio will be reviewed for acceptance for admission
to the MSN program.

program:

Action on Admission
The Admissions Committee will select the best-qualified applicants for the MSN program based
on a composite assessment of:
Academic performance on all coursework taken, with particular emphasis on
undergraduate nursing courses, relevance to selected MSN focus, patterns of course
withdrawals and course repeats, and the nature of course selections.
Applicant-supplied information and statements on the application forms and essay.
Writing and verbal communication skills.
Completeness of application forms.
Admission to the MSN degree program is contingent on sufficient enrollment for the
program. If sufficient numbers of applicants are not reached at the May 1
st
deadline,
qualified applicants will be referred to other options.
