Medical Reduced Course Load (RCL) Form
Medical Reduced Course Load
U.S. immigration regulations [8 C.F.R. § 214.2(f)(6)(iii)] require international students to enroll in a full course
of study every quarter, with some exceptions. Students can request special permission for part-time study or
a quarter off due to a temporary illness or medical condition. In order to be approved for a reduced course
load (RCL) for medical reasons, the student must provide medical documentation (a letter) from a licensed
medical doctor, doctor of osteopathy, or licensed clinical psychologist to the International Programs (IP)
office to substantiate the illness or medical condition.
Requirements and Restrictions
Medical RCLs can only be authorized one quarter at a time
o A student wishing to request medical RCL for more than one quarter must submit an updated
request each quarter to the IP office for approval.
Medical RCL must be approved by the IP office before a student reduces their course load.
A student is allowed a maximum of 12 months (4 quarters) of medical RCL per degree level.
You must request medical RCL by the last day of the quarter in which you wish to be enrolled less
than full time.
IMPORTANT NOTE TO STUDENTS WHO ARE PREGNANT: A normal pregnancy and delivery are
not medical conditions warranting reduced course load. If you are having a normal pregnancy or
delivery with no other medical complications, the IP office will not authorize RCL. If you have a
medical complication or condition outside of a normal pregnancy or delivery, your doctor may
recommend medical RCL.
Medical RCL Steps:
1. Read the above requirements and restrictions for medical RCL carefully and meet with an IP advisor
if you are not sure whether your case will qualify.
2. Have your doctor complete page 3 & 4 of this form and write a short letter to substantiate your
illness or medical condition.
3. Submit this form and doctor’s letter to the IP office for review and approval.
4. Once the IP office has approved you for medical RCL, you may drop/withdraw from your course(s)
for the quarter.
a. Note: after the 6
th
week of the quarter you must complete a Hardship Withdrawal form at
Kodiak Corner to be allowed to withdraw from courses.
