Name: ____________________________
Date: ______________________________
Directions: Read the following story and make your choice.
After you find an ancient bottle in the desert, a genie appears. For his
freedom, he offers you two choices: 500,000 gold coins or a magical gold
coin. The magical gold coin will turn into 2 gold coins at the end of the first
day. The 2 coins will turn into 4 coins at the end of the second day. By the
end of the third day, there will be 8 gold coins. The genie tells you that this
will continue for 30 days.
1. Which option is more valuable, the 500,000 gold coins or the magical
gold coin?
2. Explain how you decided which is more valuable.
Once you have decided which is more valuable, answer the following
questions:
3. The number of coins on the third day will be 2 × 2 × 2. Use exponents to
write another expression to show how many coins there will be on the
third day.
4. Write an expression for the number of coins there will be on the 30th
day. Is this more or less than 1 million coins?
