LAWN IRRIGATION SYSTEMS
INFORMATION
PERMIT REQUIRED
A permit is required from any person desiring to install a lawn irrigation system.
The following conditions and requirements apply:
o The Illinois Environmental Protection Agency and the State of Illinois Plumbing Code
requires an underground lawn sprinkler systems to have a reduced pressure zone (RPZ)
backflow preventer similar to a Watts Series 909 backflow preventer.
o The RPZ must be protected from freezing. This can be achieved by EITHER installing it in a
heated space (inside or in a hot box) with adequate drainage for the relief valve discharge,
or removing the RPZ before each winter. If the RPZ is removed, a new permit will be
required each time for the reinstallation of the RPZ.
o The RPZ must be installed by a state licensed plumber per (892.30) and tested and certified
by a Licensed Cross Connection Control Device Inspector before it can be put into
operation. Your state licensed plumbing contractor can help with this. The Illinois
Environmental Protection Agency requires the preventer to be reinspected at the
homeowner’s expense annually thereafter and a copy submitted to our office.
o No sprinkler heads are allowed in the right-of-way (parkway) and it’s recommended that
they not be placed in the easement as well.
o Water used by the underground lawn sprinkler system shall be billed the same as potable
water. No separate water meters will be allowed.
o Please be aware that Water Conservation Ordinance #677 and Amendment Ordinance
#2002-0903A have been adopted and will be strictly enforced.
o Allowable hours for construction within the Village are 6:30 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. daily.
o Lawn irrigation systems are authorized on a case-by-case basis.
