Unit 6 Lesson 20: Percentage of a Number:
Word Problems
Directions: Solve.
Example: At soccer practice, Peter
made 12 out of 20 goal attempts.
What percentage of the goals did he
make?
1. Vanessa made 60 cupcakes for
the party. 5% of the cupcakes
were burnt. How many cupcakes
did Vanessa burn?
2. In Mr. Lee’s class, 40% of the
students turned in their
biographies. How many students
are in Mr. Lee’s class if 8 turned
in their biographies?
3. On Saturday night, 94% of the
students on the football team are
going to the banquet. How many
students are on the football team
if 47 are going to the banquet?
1. Read the problem.
2. Make a plan. I know Peter made a ratio of 12:20
goal attempts. To find the percentage, I need to
find the number of goals he made out of 100
attempts. Since 20 × 5 = 100, I will multiply both
the number of goals and number of attempts by 5.
3. Solve.
Peter made 60% of his goal
attempts.
4. Check for reasonableness.
My answer is reasonable because
12/20 = 0.60 and
60/100 = 0.60.
Goals Attempts
12 20
24 40
36 60
48 80
60 100
