Earning CLEP credit
CLEP testing is limited to students who are currently enrolled at Golden Gate University or to
applicants of Golden Gate University. Generally, you may take up to two exams per test day.
To receive credit, you must:
1. Take the correct test. Pages 7 and 8 of this bulletin list GGU courses and their CLEP
equivalents. Questions about which exam(s) to take should be discussed with your
academic advisor.
Repeating CLEP Exams:
Do not register for any CLEP exam that you have already taken within the past
three months. CLEP exams repeated before three months have passed will not be
scored or reported to GGU. Your exam fees are not refundable.
Golden Gate University fully supports the three month “no-repeat” CLEP
rule.
2. Receive the required credit-granting score recommended by the American Council on
Education as printed in the What Your CLEP Score Means explanation guide.
Minimum scores for earning credit at GGU are listed on page 9 of this bulletin.
IMPORTANT: TIMING IS URGENT.
Please do not postpone taking your exam. If your last term before graduation is approaching,
please plan to take your last CLEP exam at least two months prior to your expected graduation
date.

Policies
Liberal Studies Core Requirements and General Elective Credit
Several CLEP exams, found on pages 7-8 of this bulletin, include some exams that grant six
credits: three for a Liberal Studies Core Requirement, and three for General Elective credit only.
General Elective credit for these exams cannot be used to satisfy any other course requirement,
but will be added to the list of General Electives on your transcript. There are no
exceptions to this policy.
English 1A and the “College Composition” Exam: 2-hour exam with essay
GGU awards credit through CLEP for English 1A, but NOT for English 1B.
Students who want to earn credit for English 1A through CLEP must take the General CLEP
exam entitled “College Composition.” No other CLEP exam is acceptable. The exam
entitled “College Composition Modular (no essay)” will not count for 1A.
The General Exam consists of multiple choice questions (60 minutes) and an essay section
(60 minutes) completed online using word processing. Credit is granted only when both
sections of the exam are passed.
Receiving your Scores: Plan carefully!
If you need CLEP credit for a specific term, plan carefully. While you may know your results
immediately after an exam, it can take CLEP up to 10 – 14 business days to send the official
results.
Additionally, there is an approximately 2-week processing time once GGU receives your
scores. Plan for a total processing time of 4-6 WEEKS.
Any exam with an essay component takes longer to score, and results will be sent to GGU in
approximately 6 weeks. The English 1A equivalent exam will take around 8 weeks to be
processed.
Study Materials
The College Board publishes The Official handbook for the CLEP Examinations. This book
includes sample exam questions and answers. You may visit the University Library to view
a reserved desk copy.
There are also individual subject review books which can be purchased at bookstores or on
the College Board website (www.collegeboard.com/clep).

includes:
Candidate Data: Fill in the personal data form and specify a score recipient.
Read through the test center regulation screens.
Optional: Complete a brief computer-based tutorial prior to starting the exam to illustrate
basic exam-navigation functions.
Read information screens: Confidentiality Agreement, Background Questions, and Exam

90 minutes or less:
You will be prompted to “Take the Exam.” This is when the timer begins. You may complete
the exam at your own pace.
Approximately 15 minutes:
After you have completed (or exited) the exam, you will be asked to answer Exit Evaluation
Questions and read a Scoring Information screen.
Choose to report or cancel your score.
Choosing to view your score means it will be reported. If you choose to cancel the exam,
you will not be given the option to view your score. Please weigh your decision carefully
as it will be final.
