*Golden Gate University School of Law has a unique program designed to help our Law students obtain funding
for positions with government or non-profit agencies through which they are serving the public interest when the
agency does not have the funds to contribute the share required by the FWS program. Funding for this program
comes from the Federal Work-Study Program and Golden Gate University School of Law. In the traditional
work-study program, a qualified agency pays a percentage of the student’s wage and the federal government
pays the remaining portion. In this program, Golden Gate pays the agency’s portion of the student’s wage. The
agency is not responsible for any portion of the student’s wage.
To qualify agencies must be:
a) not for profit/government (including courts);
b) unable to contribute financially towards the student’s salary; and
c) unable to provide funding for any other student law clerks.
WORK STUDY POLICIES
Receiving work study will reduce your additional loan eligibility for the term in which you receive the award.
Enrollment is not required to receive work study; however, if you receive work study and are not enrolled,
your additional loan eligibility for the upcoming terms in the 2019-2020 year will be reduced by any
amount earned.
There is limited funding for this program and not all students who apply will receive funds. Funds will be
awarded at the discretion of the Financial Aid Office.
The work performed under Federal Work Study (FWS) must be non-political, non-religious, and consistent with
the purpose of Title IV, Part C, of the Higher Education Act of 1965, as amended. All of the regulations
regarding the federal work-study program are applicable to the Golden Gate University’s Public Interest Work-
Study Program.
You may not receive paid compensation for the same position for which you are earning academic credit. If
awarded FWS, you will need to complete additional forms for the HR department and your host agency must
complete a FWS contract with GGU (this process may take several weeks). Failure to adhere to all HR policies
will result in forfeiture of your FWS award. Any hours worked prior to HR clearance and Law Financial
Aid clearance will not be paid. If awarded FWS, you will be required to adhere to all GGU HR policies.
