BAR EXAM PREP LOAN A
PPLICATION
For the July 2018 Bar Exam
The intent of this loan is to assist eligible Golden Gate University School of Law JD students in paying for the
costs of bar review courses and assist with living expenses for those taking the California exam for the first time.
Funding is limited to cover up to the total cost of the review courses through our partner, Themis plus reasonable
living expenses. Loans are awarded on a first-come, first-served basis. Incomplete applications or those missing
documents will not be reviewed. The priority date to submit this application is April 6, 2018. Students will be
notified of
funding decisions starting April 13, 2018.
ELIGIBILITY
To be eligible, JD students must complete this application and:
be sitting for the California bar exam in July 2018 for the first time;
have been denied a bar loan by at least two private lenders (attach copy of denial letters dated within the
last 30 days with this application);
be in good standing with the university (have no prior outstanding balance with GGU);
submit proof of registration and payment/deposit for the bar review course;
submit a brief statement explaining the need for funding. The statement should include repayment plans
for any student loans borrowed during law school (see page 2 of application);
meet with our bar services department and submit a statement stating you have developed a bar study plan

Schedule a one-on-one exit counseling appointment with Jeff Hanson to review your financial aid/loan
repayment.

2. STUDENT CERTIFICATION
Based on the criteria set forth on this application, I am eligible to be considered for a bar preparation loan and
have submitted all the required documentation to support this application. I understand that if I am approved for
this bar preparation loan, I will need to complete a Bar Preparation Loan Promissory Note prior to funds being
released to me. Additionally, by accepting this loan, I understand that I will no longer eligible to receive any
other private bar loans.

4. Review Total Debt:
Visit www.nslds.ed.gov and select the “Financial Aid Review” option (you will need your FAFSA PIN to
log on). Review your loan history. Attach a printout of your loan history table. If you have accepted
private loans, please make sure to indicate your total private loan debt in the statement you are
providing for this petition.
5. Review loan repayment plans:
Visit www.studentloans.gov and go to Managing Repayment > Repayment Plans and Calculators. After
reviewing the repayment plans and calculators, choose the plan you anticipate using and enter your
total debt into the calculator. Attach a print-out of the estimated monthly payment. If you have
accepted private loans, contact your lender to estimate your future monthly payments and make sure
to indicate your estimated monthly payments in the statement you are providing for this petition.
